I think a "real flash" ie a capacitor flash would absolutely demolish your battery. Any decent camera is going to cost at least a hundred bucks or so and I don't think we need a $800 device that takes half-decent pictures like a $100 digi. There are already phones with high megapixel cameras but they aren't cheap and don't really sell. The amount of camera you would have to add to a phone to make it competitive with a stand-alone would make it huge and a memory hog. Part of the reason these pictures suck is the sensor but a lot of it is because you can't fit a decent lens on a phone without it taking up too much room. The market for these phones is not photographers too lazy to carry around their cameras *and* phones. It's businessmen and techies who want a computer in their pocket and also to snap the occasional picture of a UFO or their kids. If you want a real camera, spend at least $250 and get something with a real flash, a real lens, and a dedicated form factor.

What kind of pictures is everyone expecting? I'd consider the pics I posted above more than adequate for spontaneous, point-and-shoot type pictures. Are your results worse?

The pictures in your link are only 500x375 instead of 1600x1200 that the phone can do. Did you shoot them in that resolution or did you tweak them with some software?

Flickr resized them. The originals are attached. They're not great, but they're not horrible.

Maybe I'm weird... but I have multiple cameras

- mogul, for when I want to shoot a picture of something spur of the moment, like something in a store, or my meal, or a contact photo, or a whiteboard at work

- Nikon Coolpix L11 (and an L4 in the kid's hands too) for vacation/casual events where I would not want to have the bulk (or the risk) of the D70 DSLR

- Nikon D70 + assorted lenses, flashes, etc for when I want to be a photographer.

I will often have all three as these camera qualities are additive

But to expect the telephone to shoot as well as even the $120 Coolpix (which is roughly the same size, but has 8Mpix and a sensor that is no doubt massively larger, a lens that is 10 orders of magnitude larger, and dedicated image processing hardware) is madness. It's a $5 camera for heaven's sake. Maybe $10. Tops. It shoots just like one, too.

So, yeah, the mogul takes wonderful cellphone shots.

My phone doesn't take a picture that good. They are virtually un-useable even for the contact pic. They are either blurry, have white highlight or edges. What I am seeming to notice between the thread I started here and one on PDAPhoneHome it seems to be a Verizon problem. The cameras taking decent pics are the Sprints. If you want to see the quality of the pics some of us are talking about look here. Maybe we have defective cameras(thats what I am trying to figure out)

Check these out and maybe the problem will be a little more clear.

I don't expect great pictures from a phone camera, but I thought that it would be a little bit better than the 1.3MP cameras that I've used in previous phones and it isn't. I took much cleaner pictures with my Moto e815 than my Mogul can take.

It isn't a deal breaker for me by any means, but it is still disappointing.

who knows maybe the next ROM update will have something that will improve picture quality. If I remember correctly the Moto e815 had the same camera hardware as the v710, but took better pictures.

oh well time will tell.......

OK, I see. You have something wrong with your camera. I thought people were just complaining about the generally crap quality of phone add-on cameras.

I snapped these outside my office today on my Titan. They could use some level tweaking but I'm at my work computer and I don't have photoshop here. Not that great but not blurry like those you posted.
