Tutorial: USB DUN with "Wireless Modem" app on HTC Mogul

I've been using the Wmodem program for a couple weeks and the setup, etc...listed here worked great with no problems.

My problem is that my Mogul keeps using the painfully slow 1x connection in areas where EVDO is available.

For example, I live near an interstate and always get EVDO here. If I drive out into the boonies and get a 1x connection and then come back here, it's still on 1x.

There are two issues at hand here:
1.) The phone is not using the best available service
2.) If I shutdown Wmodem, the 1x connection immediately turns back to EVDO.

How can I correct this problem? I don't mind if it uses a 1x connection if that's all there is, but there's definitely something else going on here.
