Re: So long to enthusiasts... welcome Windows 7 Phone Series

Another thing that people forget is that MS does not "officially" allow customization of 6.5.x Titanium either. Yet look at all the plugins that have been developed...

There is a big difference between what MS will allow OEMs to do (less they screw with it, better IMO), what MS will support and what will be possible by geeks that frequent those forums.

Re: So long to enthusiasts... welcome Windows 7 Phone Series

Next month they are going to be releasing more info on the SDK and such so we should know more about how devs will make stuff in this new OS and what the capabilities will be then.

I don't think so.

SERIES is no doubt marketing lingo used to capitalize on the GREAT REVIEWS for WINDOWS 7 (for PC) since it's launch. And it's record-breaking sales.

Lucky 7.

Windows 7 is a SMASHING SUCCESS... now you build on that with "windows phone"

7 Series as in Windows 7.... Windows Phone 7

Don't expect a "zune 7 series", "business 7 series", "pink 7 series". You all hear Steve Ballmer & co. explain how PHONES are BUSINESS & SOCIAL/PERSONAL all the time. there is no separating personal from business. People aren't gonna be carrying two phones/devices anymore.

A big reason why WinMobile marketshare DROPPED so heavily (really) since iPhone is really due to expanded market and the fact that BUSINESS/corporate is niche... 86% or so of smartphones are sold in RETAIL now. Business exclusive use of "smartphones" is a minority. So unless WinMobile was looking like WP7 2 years ago it's demise was inevitable due to soccer moms & the like buying cute smartphones in shopping malls.

Thankfully Microsoft CLEARLY realizes this (even if many editors dont yet)

there will be many in the corporate workforce (not buisnessmen persay) that will carry a phone and a windows portable device. anywhere from warehouse employee's to marine/oil reasearchers. all of them will need spcialized capabilites with the broad programming options of windows. but since most data communication is now over celular networks it's basically like our current wm6(.5)
besides the #1 user will still be on wm6.5 this time next year... (the president) maybe..

Re: So long to enthusiasts... welcome Windows 7 Phone Series

There is an exception to every rule. what you posted is all true but doesn't change the fact Windows Phone Classic (formerly 6.x) is - after wp7 ships - "legacy" support.

You won't see a "series" of various featured windows 7 smartphones in Verizon, Tmobile, ATT, Sprint, mobile kiosks. It's was laid out clarly for you Monday.

Consistent User Interface/Experience... which any and all vendors realize will help them SELL PHONES (priority #1).

They probably got that idea because Microsoft confirmed it. Like the iPhone, Seven's multitasking will be limited to things built-into the phone. You'll be able to play your Zune and use your calendar at the same time and the ActiveSync push technology will run in the background. But third party applications will not be able to multitask as they can on WM. There was a specific discussion about this linked to via PocketNow.com. (The site's down right now or I'd just link it here.) Even in the video you link to above, listen carefully to what he says. He skirts around the issue by telling you what will work. He carefully avoids admitting what won't.

Some have asked, why you need it anyway. Well one of the most common things people multitask with on WM phones is GPS applications. From full-fledged navigation programs to background location data loggers, it sounds like Seven will be unable to do those things at the same time as doing anything else. That will render them largely useless. Another is using other types of music services than the built-in one, like Pandora. Those probably won't run in the background.

I use a timer application with a notetaker on my Imagio in a class I teach. That depends on multitasking. The timer is timing the length of a speech while the notes are in the foreground so I can enter comments. The timer beeps when the student's time is up. It would obviously be useless to me if the timer paused while in the background. That application of multitasking is really useful to me in my job and if I were to move to Seven, I'd have to find a different way to achieve that.

Now it may not be the end of the world, and clearly for millions of iPhone users, it's not a problem. But that doesn't mean it's not a real issue for people who actually do care about it. If you don't need it, then fine. No problem for you. But for those who do, they have every right to be disappointed to have lost a feature they depend on.

Ahhh. I see. I will have to check that out. Than it seems that video is a little on the deceptive side bc i know that I watched it and thought, "What's everyone so ticked about."

Was the purpose of killing the multi-task bc Windows phone's lag so bad (don't get mad guys-they're great phones but come on-they lag)?

Muti-tasking is limited on Windows Phone 7. If you leave or minimize a app, its in a paused state but can do updates via push notification.

that remains to be seen. obviously m$ is trying to re-define or further define what multi-tasking is. my guess is that the easy program(ing/s) will pause by default, and it will take more complicated programming to multi-task. but I'm sure we'll find out next month what the development side of things will really entail.
