Gmail icon/widget that shows number of unread emails?

If you setup gmail trough mail app it should be showing unread count.

Hmm, I think everyone's getting confused. The op wanted an icon that showed the # of unread gmails. I showed him what icon I use to show how many unread gmails I have.

Agreed, but he was looking for it using the Gmail app, not the stock email client. He was looking for a gmail widget.

I agree that if you set up Gmail using the stock email cilent with exchange setting, the unread count does show up.

But if you use the Gmail App, unread count does not show up.

So if the OP switch to stock email client with exchange settings for Gmail. He would get it as you mentioned it. But he'd lose the Gmail App's functionality.
