But if you use the Gmail App, unread count does not show up.

So if the OP switch to stock email client with exchange settings for Gmail. He would get it as you mentioned it. But he'd lose the Gmail App's functionality.
Pretty much, and I have my exchange mail already in use for my work exchange account.
