chasing a root

Can one person give me all the links to do a root and a ROM. I keep running around from link to link and I have no idea which to download.
I have a sprint HERO.....1.5 firmware already installed.

I keep hearing people say I need to downgrade before I can root????
I tried doing the flash method and I get stuck.
I tried the UNlockR method and my phone got wiped clean.

I know its possible but I just need the right person to give me the directions PLEASE.

Re: chasing a root

Carla helped me, give me a minute to pull up the instructions and I will post them here for you. It was a breeze and I was done with everything in like 10-15 minutes (max).

Ok let’s do this by baby steps…I will show you how to gain root access on your phone, using ONLY your phone. I have done this and I KNOW it works. It doesn’t matter what firmware you currently have because they are all based off the same kernel, the last couple digits tell you from what region its from.

The rooting guides out there usually bundle up instructions on how to update your ROM right away too, obviously this is too confusing for some people and it will be discussed in later steps. I’m not going to take ANY credit for this what-so-ever and I’m just creating an “EASIER” step-by-step guide for you that are having trouble…if it does help I would still like a “THANKS”

NOW TO THE NITTY GRITTY!!!

On your phone…go to menu>settings>applications make sure you check the box that says unknown sources.

ON YOUR PHONE PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE FOLLOWING:

1. FlashRec http://zenthought.org/system/files/a...20091107-2.apk after this has downloaded click on it to install.
2. Linda File Manager (Search for "linda" in the Android Marketplace)
3. Astro (Search for “.zip” in the Android Marketplace)
4. Rooted Recovery Img http://www.4shared.com/file/25727451...eroc-v162.html Again visit this link from your phone and download to your device…simple right?

After the above steps are complete please do the following:

Go to applications and open FlashRec and press “backup” if it gives you an error just reboot the phone and try, try again. This will create a file called recovery-backup.img which is going to be basically useless to you. This file will be at the root folder of the SD card.
This is what you should see....

Go to applications and open Linda File Manager…Please navigate to “SD CARD” using, navigate to backup-recovery.img AND DELETE IT!!!

NEXT…using the same program go to your “DOWNLOADS” folder. Please navigate to “recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img” and RENAME this to: “recovery-backup.img” VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

NEXT…using LINDA MOVE the backup-recovery.img file to the root folder of your SD CARD…again IMPORTANT!!!

Now, go back to FlashRec ***Recovery Flasher in applications*** press “RESTORE BACKUP”
You should do this...

After everything is done, take the battery out of your phone…put it in…AND do this:

Press AND hold the “home” button and then press and release power button…DO NOT RELEASE "HOME" UNTIL YOU SEE A WEIRD SCREEN. It should remind you of a DOS screen with menu options, if you see this YOU HAVE ROOTED YOUR PHONE! Please navigate to “backup/restore” and back-up everything.

This is the screen you should see:

Re: chasing a root

You are now official to download and install any ROM you want AND download applications that require "root" access

In all honesty if you don't even know what "WINRAR" is, you shouldn't try and messing around with rooting your phone. There has to be a few people in Florida that should know what they are doing. Not trying to sound like an a$$ but buying a new phone outright can get expensive. If someone helps you out just buy them a 12 pack er something cause it's super easy.

Now you can download ANY ROM that you want and place it in the root directory of your SD card.

Things to remember....

Leave the ROM in a .zip file
Place at the root of the SD Card
Boot into recovery (the last step above in last post)
use; flash zip from SD Card to update the ROM and Reboot
Usually it will take 10-20 minutues for the phone to start back up after a ROM update...this is normal so just be patient.

Re: chasing a root

Have you tried using Flipz Kitchen? I didn't get to use it personally, but read his thread and looks extremely easy and definitely worth a try and then after your rooted you can load any custom 2.1 rom. Heres the link http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=116329
Just from my experience, its easy to jump ahead of things and not read things carefully enough, so my sugesstion is just take your time and read the instructions carefully and you'll save yourself a headache

Re: chasing a root

I was going to post what Carla sent me in a PM but got sucked into a meeting at work. When I returned, I see that ducylowycz already posted a good tutorial, so I am going to leave it at that.

If you run into problems post back here or you can PM me directly and I will help you. Also, if after you get rooted you are confused at how to flash a custom ROM, hit me up and I will help you there as well.

Damage and Flipz both have great ROMS but I personally am using Fresh 2.0d right now and am very happy with it.

Re: chasing a root

I download the programs to my phone..............

why am I downloading Linda and Astro????

I install the flashrec and then hit the restore button.....
I go to Linda......SD card and delete the backup-recovery.img

Then I go back into LINDA.....downloads and rename the Recovery-RA program to Backup-Recovery.img........but how do you "move it" to the root of the SD card.

Also why is it Backup-Recovery.img and Recovery-backup.img under the recovery flasher on your snap-shot screen?????

Re: chasing a root

I have cleaned up this thread of the unnecessary and rude comments. OP, please understand that the members here are helping you the best they know how and doing so for free. ducylowycz, please understand that the OP is looking for help and is very frustrated with not being able to do something that everyone touts as being "simple."

Different people are at different levels of understanding and learning, so let's please keep this in mind and keep the comments civil and respectful moving forward. Thank you.
