Re: How to set up internet calling on EVO
Google Voice currently only works in USA. While you are in US just install GV, run it and configure to send all calls to GV. try placing a call, it should go through GV. This however may or may not work outside of the US (there are some mixed reports from different countries, and I just came back from Russia where GV did not work) Skype is your bes bet, just get some skype-out credit and give it a try. Fring might be another option. thirtd option could be SIP, just get a SIP account and SIP software and configure it ( I use broadvoice and acrobis softphone) - none of those are free, btw

Re: How to set up internet calling on EVO
I am currently on the west coast...and have tried to make calls thru Google Voice over wifi only with NO 3G connectivity. I have been using GV since it first released (part of their beta testing group) after they changing from Grand Central.
I was unable to just make calls over WiFi (I was in the Mojave Desert.) I have tried tango...voice only...but it was lagging really bad. Was hoping for a MORE direct wifi only calling thru GV more like a computer to computer experience. |

You might want to read thru this: Ways to Communicate With a Soldier in Iraq & Afghanistan
leonidm is accurate in that Skype is your best (maybe only) shot. However, in reading that site I posted, sometimes access is blocked due to security concerns. |

Re: How to set up internet calling on EVO
Dude. Install SIPDroid from the market. It's free. Then make a new account and it will automatically link to your Google account and you can make calls via WiFi.
Trust me, it works. It's relatively simple, too. And works quite well.

Re: How to set up internet calling on EVO
thanks for all the reply and suggestions...
I have to clarify...this is NOT my first deployment...and I have used MWR...and now MCCS internet cafe at several available locations in Iraq...and Afghan. I know there are PLENTY of capabilities for me to contact my family to include DSN lines...email...sat phones and such. In fact I'm quite sure there are cell phones available locally in Af. However, I wanted to set up VOIP on my EVO for several reasons... 1) not having to wait in line at the internet cafe at the wee hours of the morning/evenings when everyone is there. 2) see number one 3) being able to talk on my own device vice sitting with many other service members and everyone hears everyone else. 4) see number one. what it boils down to is convenience...and also a level of satisfaction that most of us Geekers can say...I can do it with my phone. I understand at this point it seems that Skype is my only option (which I have had an acc't for years and have used it with WM6.5.X) I wanted to be able to utilize the internet calling function that OUR device has...and not let it go to waste. Pls understand where I'm coming from...and what I hope to achieve. |

Re: How to set up internet calling on EVO
I've just tested GV from my EVO over wifi to call my home number and it works , I use it often when in US, so if it does not work for you it is ether because something is not setup right on your phone or your wi-fi connection somehow is not GV friendly.
