Angry got humbled by an iPhone

A co-worker came in with his new Thunderbolt. He had great LTE access so we were all comparing SpeedNet results. He was getting 15 Meg down and 22Meg up!!!!

I was getting 6.7 Meg Down and less than 2 Meg up (Wimax).

For grins, he turned on his wireless tether. It is free to him for 30 days. I connected to his phone and was getting less than 2 Meg up or down.

Then another guy came along and connected with his iPhone ( model 1) and he was getting 6 Meg Down and up!!! We ran a series of tests with both of us hitting the Thunderbolt at the same time and the results were similar.

I was motified.

The question posed to me was what type of WiFi connection does the EVO have. 802.11 (?). B, G, N? I tried to find the answer using System Info but coudl not find the RFC stamped anywhere. Does anyone know? Is it throttled?

Admittedly, I was running Gingerbread and that may account for the slow radio. I reflached a Sense 2.2 Rom but by then, the guy with the Thunderbolt was gone.

Re: got humbled by an iPhone

That blows. Network aside, his phone was old before it came out as we had ours for 7 months already. And we have unlimited internet and free tethering which neither of those phones have

Re: got humbled by an iPhone

iphone model 1 is not N...that said it really doesn't make much difference in this case..as even 11mbps connection would be able to withhold around 5mb up and down to the very least...

So I can think of 2 possibilities...

1) There might be an issue with the N connection on either Evo or Thunderbolt or both..

2) There is something wrong with the Wifi on the EVO that is capping it..similar to when using tether on a pc..

Try using a laptop with N connection to test and see if it has same issue.

so that we get higher rates and data caps?

your wishing for wrong thing...what we gotta wish for is same thing that happened in Russia..all carriers teamed up to share spectrum in LTE...aka its dumb to have each carrier with their own spectrum..FCC should set aside spectrum for cellphones and ALL carriers get to share it...it would be economic and provide best coverage and speed...then carriers compete on customer service/services.

Well then this would be ideal:

Russia's major mobile operators join hands for unified LTE rollout -- Engadget

I mean as of now the carriers building multiple towers in same markets is repetitive and waste of spectrum....if US carriers do the same thing or something similar..its a win/win for everyone...aka if we did this..we could have nationwide LTE with 0 interruption and 100% USA coverage in 2-3 years..

Re: got humbled by an iPhone

I at home now and ran SpeedNet across my WiFi
I am getting 7.31 MB Down and 1.11 MB up

I ran it using my Laptop and saw 15.34 MB and 1.07 MB
My carrier is Charter.
Obviously Charter is throttling my uploads, which is not uncommon but my phone should be able to do better than 7.31!
