I tink you are a lil confoozed man.
It's not ILLEGAL to flash custom roms, superuser, yada yada yada. In fact, the only thing that IS illegal is to hack ESN numbers. Warranty's are a courtesy that the manufacturer or distributer extends to you. Because of this, they could say that picking your nose while holding the phone voids it (just an example, no one freak out). The point is as a warranty they can say whatever they want to void it, and I assure you, it is extensively mentioned that anything of the sort will void it. That's why god or xda created the re-lock. And why HTC is cracking down on stockroms.com.
Go figure.

Mag Moss just allows non OEM stuff, but doesn't negate the requirement that they meet OEM specs in order to maintain warranty.

Interesting. I wasn't thinking about this portion of the act...

So how does this apply to having access to the root user on your phone(let's say the Unrevoked root) - can they deny warranty claims on the basis that you have access to a user you weren't supposed to? I've maintained through this entire debate that hardware and software are different. If your backlight on your LCD dies, or your digitizer stops working, they can't go "OH YOU HAVE ROOT! WE WONT FIX" because that shouldn't apply.

I guess it really just rubs me the wrong way to think that if a carrier/company(HTC in this case) wanted to be complete jerks, they could say things like "You've installed software on your device. That's an unauthorized modification and therefor we won't support it." Now, I think this concept has been challenged in court for PCs, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any more info?

Software can do things that shorten the life of hardware, so yes, they can void the warranty. I first became aware of how software could wreak havoc on hardware in 1982 when I was programming software for Commodore computers. We discovered a looping algorithem that would get a spot in a chip so hot it would burn out the chip.

Re: Returned Rooted Evo to Best Buy????

I would have done the same thing. I work in Mobile. I always look at the phones when people return them to see if they've been hacked. Don't get mad at the guy because you screwed up your phone. It's not his fault you live 25 miles from the store. It's not his fault you rooted and broke your phone. Everyone knows the risks of flashing phones and that it voids your warranty. He was actually being cool by not making a note in the system to not do a return. At least he gave you the chance to fix it. Be grateful they'll do it at all. Good luck getting it un-rooted.

You may wanna know the whole story before you try to tell someone off...
FACT is every single issue that my phone has, it had before I rooted it or made any changes to it. All of these problems showed up in the first 5 days of owning the phone so rooting it is not what broke it. FACT # 2 Neither you nor that guy are the freakin phone hacking police and need to stick to your job which is to service customers NOT look for reasons not to honor your return/exchange policy. FACT # 3 if I really wanted to make a big deal about it I could have simply asked the manager to show me a written sign that is in plain public view and prove that best buy did its due diligence in making me fully aware that rooting my phone would allow them break the terms of there written and published return and exchange policy.

Also, I dont need your wish of good luck getting the phone unrooted I already unrooted it and returned it back to stock and the best buy around the block from my house is getting another shipment this week and are holding one for me when they come in. If that fails (and it wont) my cousin works for best buy in the phone dept about 40 miles from my house he already told me he could make it happen for me.

Furthermore, since you wanna try to be smart... I'm well aware of how notations in systems work and was well aware before I went into the store that they may try something like that and didnt give him or anymore else my phone number, sprint account number or name so that no notes could be made. Good night.

I work in best buy mobile as well and I would definitely not take your phone back, even though I'm safe in the knowledge that, at some point, I probably helped you root it. Mine's rooted, but I'm not stupid enough to ignore the fact that I voided my warranty and try and return it. Do you get pissed when we check your water damage sticker? Get a life, dude.
