I guess it really just rubs me the wrong way to think that if a carrier/company(HTC in this case) wanted to be complete jerks, they could say things like "You've installed software on your device. That's an unauthorized modification and therefor we won't support it." Now, I think this concept has been challenged in court for PCs, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any more info?
Software can do things that shorten the life of hardware, so yes, they can void the warranty. I first became aware of how software could wreak havoc on hardware in 1982 when I was programming software for Commodore computers. We discovered a looping algorithem that would get a spot in a chip so hot it would burn out the chip.
