Big time noob question
Sorry, but I just need to make sure i'm headed in the right direction. Since I see sling player is coming tomorrow, i'm going to go ahead and get the EVO hopefully this weekend. Now I've been reading forums and bookmarking threads but now its soo much stuff i need to make sure i have my steps right, i'm coming from WinMo.
So what I want is a fully rooted phone, and just the stock rom, but i want to remove the bloatware from the phone. Are these the right steps? 1) purchase phone 2) install android SDK 3) use toast method to do full root and unlock nand found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835 or it seems i can use this SimpleRoot...i think: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706411 4) now heres where it gets tricky for me...the phone should be fully rooted, can i just uninstall the software/bloatware that i dont want on the phone? or do i have to flash the stock rom before i can make changes? 5)after all of this, do I stay away from all OTAs? or can I do them with peace of mind? thats pretty much it, i dont plan on flashing a custom rom till 2.2 drops, so my plan for the phone is pretty simple rooted stock without bloatware. thanks for any help, and hopefully this thread helps someone else as well...like i said i dont need help with the actual steps, i have bookmarks for how to do them...i just need to know i got the steps right and i'm not missing anything

Personally I would go with the Code:
1) purchase phone :-) 2) install android SDK 3) use toast method to do full root and unlock nand found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835 You will need to be fully rooted to remove the sprint apps/bloatware.. Until the 1 click rooting thing gets better I wouldn't use it. Just because you don't really know what its doing and where its leaving off when it blows up. Just a piece of mind I guess. Oh and yes stay away from OTA's... usually a dev on XDA will make a "safe" version that you won't lose your root status.

Re: Big time noob question
You don't have too, but you will lose root most likely if you do an OTA.
The devs are very quick..and realistically there are not too many OTA's ever.... Oh and you can search on how to remove the stock apps and most guides will tell you how to mount the system like the post above suggests... |

Re: Re: Big time noob question
No he meant that you should not flash the OTA directly... wait for the ROM developer to provide to you so you don't lose your root - superuser access.
also... yeah once you have root access you'll need to mount the system partition as writable. For that use and and type Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblock4 /system Sent from my EVO |
