Standing Underneath a Repeater and NO signal?

So while at work today, I was standing underneath our Sprint repeater and had NO signal with the EVO. No signal at all. The roaming icon came on and the bars dropped to 0, then it turned into an X.

Now, I love my EVO and all, but I'm getting shitty 4G service next to a repeater (specifically built for 4G, our company got it installed for that as well as to help boost the Sprint voice signals) but with nothing turned on and a fresh reboot I wasn't getting any signal.

Anyone else having issues?

If you call Sprint and give them the location of that repeater they can put a work order in to adjust it and get it running top-notch.

directly under a repeater is actually a dead spot if memory serves me correctly, walk about 100 feet away and see if your still no signal.

I'm not aware of a 4G repeater. My company also had sprint repeaters installed, but they are for sprint 1.9Ghz (voice & 3G) only. Sprint does not own or directly control 4G (2.5Ghz), that is owned and controlled by Clearwire. So if Clearwire did not install 4G repeater (and I'm not aware of that as an option) then 4G is not covered.

Yeah I was about to say the same exact thing. Sprint owns the controlling interest is Clearwire, therefore Clearwire is pretty much Sprint. So ueah, what he said, they do have repeaters. They probably aren't Sprint branded though.

Re: Standing Underneath a Repeater and NO signal?

A former friend of mine installed about 45% of the Sprint 3G towers in Atlanta and we often joked about how he said that there is a "dead zone" directly around the base of the antenna.

As cornelious2 mentioned, you may need some distance. I believe the signal is line of sight; directional?

It probably is directional. That way you can channel the signal one direction and get the most out of the power. But I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong.

Re: Standing Underneath a Repeater and NO signal?

If memory serves, CDMA towers (at least around here) typically had 3 directional antennae. I saw the diagram for how one local tower had its 3 antennae pointed toward a town to try to cover that part of town well. The area behind the tower would barely have had any signal.

As for what to expect from repeaters (pico cells or whatever), I really have no idea. :P

It is true that Sprint owns controlling interest in Clearwire. However, Clearwire is NOT Sprint. I know for a fact that when something goes wrong with a Clearwire 4G antenna that Sprint has no direct control over that and they must open a trouble ticket with Clearwire for service. Also, I'm not aware of any 1.9Ghz repeaters that also cover 2.5Ghz.

OP, how about a test. Move to the point where you do get a full 3G signal from the repeater (repeaters that are installed in buildings are low power and clearly work within much less than 100 feet or they would not work in a large part of the building) then check your 4G signal.
