If memory serves, CDMA towers (at least around here) typically had 3 directional antennae. I saw the diagram for how one local tower had its 3 antennae pointed toward a town to try to cover that part of town well. The area behind the tower would barely have had any signal.

As for what to expect from repeaters (pico cells or whatever), I really have no idea. :P
