It is not lost with the unrevoked method - I can attest to that. If I knew enough about this, I'd start the thread - but I am a little lost as to the differences. I went unrevoked because my device was OTA updated.

FYI, I found this:

It puts all of your text messages into gmail. So if you have something you don't want to lose, this will let you keep it. You can set it to do automatic backups of your SMS into gmail too, so kind of cool.

i follow the steps above for the recovery and my evo wont go into rcovery mode dont know if im doing something wrong or not very frustrating is there an easier way

There actually isn't an easier way.

Can you give some more details as to what's happening?
I can try to help you, but I need to know what you're doing on the phone/pc and what's happening when you do those things.

typed all the commands step by step it goes thru the prosess but my phone wont go into recovery it wont even sync now so i dont know been at this for like an hour im 2 seconds away from smashing this phone

I did the unrevoked root, but I can't get the recovery to work either...
