Part of the reason i started this thread is because i have read 100's of post on here xda and twitter some people are saying different things about this or that so i'm really trying to get some answers...

If you had the choice of "Cluster", I think that indicates you formated it using the computer. I think the safest way is to use the phone own SD format option. Menu>Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Unmount SD Card, then Format SD Card. That way you can be sure everything is set right.

When you root, it erases everything, so you might as well do it after if you plan on rooting soon, but if you still aren't sure just go ahead and dl it. BTW, I'm new to droid too and I used to be a WinMo ROM addict, and the android root instructions freak me out...

I would just install Advance Task Killer and hold off on rooting for just a bit - LINK

I'm glad you said that, i was reading the instructions and preparing to download the necessary files. This is why i opened this thread because there are soooo many different people saying different things. Just yesterday i read that it was unsafe to use the phone without rooting it because there were major security flaws... now the word is dont root?

That's my position too, don't update, don't root. Learn the phone, etc., in the meantime. Patience is a virgin, ah, I mean virtue.

You can apply the OTA update. It won't block root access.

wow... now thats new, did you install it? how do i find now that i have already declined it? Also, since I'm not having sd card problems do i really need it?

I always update software/firmware. If I was rooted (sprint hero days), I waited for the devs to cook a rom with the update. But, since this update doesn't mess with root, just install it.

I did install the update when it popped up the notification. If you cancelled it, you can go to home > menu > settings > system updates > HTC software update.
