Pretty much. It seems as if it could be over. It would be the end of a great technology though. Showing that we want faster speeds now even if it means that we would be slower in the future. By the time 4g is prominent, 5g will be talked about anyway.

Clearwire won't pull out of wimax..their whole business is wimax....many people in rural areas rely on wimax for broadband...

There is even talks of using wimax to provide usa wide internet via the governments broadband plan.

wimax for broadband is very good..and economic.

Clearwire's execs have already said they will consider changing to LTE in the future and it is just a software upgrade. They have also already amended their contract with Intel to allow both of them to switch to LTE (and Intel promptly started looking into LTE equipment).

Sprint owns 51% of Clearwire, making them the majority owner and decision maker. If Sprint decides to abandon Wimax, it will be gone.

wimax operates at 2.5Ghz frequency where as LTE operates at 700mhz. how can a software upgrade make it compatible? doesn't the phone need to have the LTE antenna to be able to work?

LTE operates at 700 Mhz because that's what they want to run it on, so if Sprint wants to run theirs at 2.5Ghz that's their business, it would work however it would create a situation like what we have with ATT & Tmobile, both have HSPA 3G but theyre on different frequencies so unless you have a phone that does both you can really only use it on one or the other, same with Europe, the technology itself is the same but on a different band so if you want to use a phone with full capabilities both here and there you have to have a quad band phone
same thing would happen where we'll end up with phones that will run on one, the other, or both, just depends on the phone

Re: Well.. this sucks for EVO 4G owners to be (including me)

doesn't 2.5ghz bandwidth require a more powerful antenna on the phone? or is the reason why engadget had trouble getting 4g signal in a ground floor cafe? where as at 700mhz, the signal is more easily able to penetrate dwellings.

i'm worried about indoor performance especially the office.
