I think people are just so excited about this device they can't see the forest through the trees. Sprint said exactly what they meant to say, and if it was a misprint they would have corrected it by now.

why do you not think it means you need the hotspot add on in order to use the phones internet wifi connection when it specifically states you need the add on to access wifi, to me it makes perfect sense. by you turning on wifi on your device you are accessing what ever hotspot you connect to. to connect to the evo's wifi hotspot, you need the add on, its simple.

while you are correct in your basics of how transmitting wireless data signals works....however, YOU are wrong in the rest

i should have been more clear... your phone, yes, will be both sending and receiving packets...but it will only act as a receiver for data packets... if it connects to a router to do this , so what? is your phone going to become the router, and the actual router is going to start displaying received information????? that is absurd, your "model" makes no sense

they cannot limit the use of your wifi antenna...it is hardware...it is always there.... if i turn off my iphones 3g and EDGE connection, i can still use my wifi...just like said before... if you buy the device and do not activate it, you will still be able to use the wifi ... it has nothing to do with network service or data service -- NOTHING

now... the hotspotting is an actual service...the same as how cell signal is a service, so is hotspotting...

dont believe me? go get a no frills phone, with a cell plan...and then go get a clearwire subscription for wireless computing... you have two plans... doing two different things

this phone allows the two to merge, so if you wish to activate the hotspotting service, you pay extra

You are just flat out wrong. The WiFi adapter is both a sender and receiver in ANY connection that it makes. And yes, if you look into router's logs it will, in fact, display information that it received from the phone.

Again, Sprint did not say "in order to access the phone's data connection on another computer" they said "in order to access WiFi." YOU are the one in left field if you are trying to say they meant something else by that.

so how is sprint going to stop you from accessing wifi when your phone isn't activated? are you telling me htc will make a phone that has wifi and won't be able to connect to wifi without sprints permission?

but if i go to starbucks and access their WAP, my phone is not going to take over and become the NEW ROUTER

it is going to connect to the WAP, and access THE WAP'S information stream... the phone is going to be a DUMB item and the WAP is the SERVICE YOU ARE ACCESSING

just becuase you connect to a router or a WAP does not mean that it is using your service

when i connect my laptop to my router , my laptop is not supplying the router with internet content.. it is simply talking to it

the same goes for the phone

if you want to use the phone's 4G network as a router so that OTHER DEVICES (laptop, etc) are able to connect to the internet...then THAT COSTS EXTRA

how can you NOT WRAP YOUR HEAD AROUND THIS?????

Why would they bother saying "you need the hotspot add on in order to use the hotspot feature" right after they already said that? And as stupid as that is, how stupid would they have to be to try and say that and accidentally say something else?

They clearly said you need to add that in order to access WiFi. If they meant to say data connection on another device, or phone's modem on another device, they could have.

Nobody said your phone would be a router. Sprint didn't say "for your phone to be a router you need the hotspot add on." No, they said in order to access WiFi you needed it.

Sprint can deactivate it and have a timer. So once it authenticate it enables and once it does not authenticate it disables.

That said what is the point of this debate? 99% of people here will end up rooting it anyways. Right now there is minimal info and once e get closer we will know for sure...
