Re: PPCGeeks Android-site equivalent?

Honestly, while we all want this site to be the place to go for EvO stuff, it isn't and I don't think ever will be. In order for PPCG to become the predominant force, it would need to get the "heavy hitters" of android to be posting only here. Sites that try to break into another niche other then what they were formed for find it hard due to
1) reputation of being for one thing, i.e. cdma winmo, not andorid. Look at XDA, doesn't have a thing one CDMA WNMO compared to PPCG. Same is true backward - we have nothing compared to XDA on the GSM side. What, 1 kitchen in the tp2 upgrade?
2) Name doesn't fit - a forum with droid in it will fare better then ppcgeeks for android specific.
There are several exceptions, (DP comes to mind), but forums are mostly geared towards 1 thing and have a hard time breaking into other markets. While I try to share/learn EvO related stuff on PPCG, I know there are several alternatives that are more informative.

Yeah but if a lot of the heavy hitters from CDMA WinMo change over to Android that would be a big boon to PPC Geeks.

Why does the name have to match XDA Developers doesn't really scream to me GSM Windows Mobile but that is what we have all associated it with over time. Names don't always have to mach

I can see where your coming from, but I think we could make this a universal smart phone website imho. I agree we would need either some major break throughs that originate here or "heavy hitters" from the interwebs.

Also as for your reasons.....

1. We could always change our reputation, I know some sites that have successfully done so.

2. And I know the name isn't perfect, but its close. I mean Pocket PCs are what most these smart phones are. Also wikipedia helps a little by saying (I know I'm twisting this quote a little lol)....

I plan to devote a big chunk of my time into this when I get the phone and I too think that with a little effort this site will have the ability to successfully function for all major OS's. I may use other site every once and a while but I always use PPCGeeks. And if you get the DroidGeeks going good and attach it to PPCGeeks that would solve the name issue.

I agree, I just hope that I we all can learn about android like we have all come to understand winmo. I hope that we become the go to site for android information just like we have become with winmo. There is alot of good people here and I hope it stays that way.=D>

No, but I might! J/K

As I have said here at PPCG in the Android forums since I switched from WinMo at the beginning of the year, I think it is ok and healthy to look for info that is not here at other forums geared more specifically for Android. I even listed some of those sites in a thread or two.

But what I also asked then, and now even more, is that we bring the information that we find there back here and share it. PPCG has been here for us strong and steady for a number of years and I would love to see us continue to thrive as a PPC forum, no matter what the device.

We have staff working hard to promote the BlackBerry and Iphone/iPod sections, as well as Android, and I am confident that our userbase and knowledge in those areas will continue to grow. Sure, there will be other sites with info or members that offer something that we don't but I assure you that is a two way street, because we have some very knowledgeable members here as well.

We already have some great stuff going on for the Hero, Moment, Nexus One and Incredible, just to name a few of the popular Android devices. And once the EVO hits the streets, and many of our diehard WinMo users/chefs move to Android, this particular section of our site will grow even more. I am confident of it.

So yeah, hit up those other sites, and do it with a clean conscience. Just do us a favor and remember that PPCG has always been here for you, has helped to feed your addiction, and the staff and members here would appreciate you bringing back what you learn to share with us.

Re: PPCGeeks Android-site equivalent?

Yeah, I kinda like that PPCG is sort-of a "catch-all" forum for all sorts of devices. Most sites are specifically geared toward one thing, be it WinMo, iPhone, Android, or Blackberry, etc., but you can find all of that here (except not much iPhone...but no one here cares).

XDA Dev is a great forum and its size is incredible, but let's face it, the community isn't as friendly or helpful and it's...well...kinda ugly. (this is not to bash the site...just saying I like it here better, lol)
