Re: Windows Mobile on Evo?

Yes, Android is 100% free and open source.

"Android is the first free, open source, and fully customizable mobile platform."

^ very first line from this page: http://source.android.com/

Also, I don't know how anything could be open source and not free, and I have never seen anything open source that had costs involved with the exception of things that were built FROM open source projects and sold (i.e. Linux distros like RedHat, SuSe, etc)

Re: Windows Mobile on Evo?

Thanks! I felt a little guilty writing that, but it was funny. I am a Microsoft supporter. I think Win7 is and new 2008 server line is outstanding. (I develop medical software for a living). That being said, I do not like WinMo in any which way or form. IMHO it is thrown together slapped out, lazy development. And the UI? My kid could design a better one. Awful. Maybe the new one is a home run, I don't know. 6.5 and below were just painful.

The moment with ole 1.5 Android smokes WinMo in ever conceivable way. 2.1 is that much better. Now look at how long MS has been on it vs Google. I had a Samsung i730 with WinMo 2003 five years ago. This is the best MS can do in 5 years?

you're right in my eyes. honestly not just any developer would be able to port winmo over to android and if someone has the skills to do that, they honestly could be selling their talent to one of these big companies. All the major companies all have iphone apps but not all of them have android apps. For instance bank of america is the only official bank app for android. Wells fargo, citibank, or any other bank will send you to the website. I would sell my skills to one of those companies for instance. I can think of a million apps that need to be created for android that was just one example, if i was a developer i would be BALLIN. why the hell would i want to be porting over winmo to android where i definitely wouldn't be getting paid?

Well, you have to remember, Android got into the game at the right time. They came at a time where they could take advantage of modern technology and create a beautiful product that's customizable and also nice looking. Microsoft has been in it for over 10 years now, and since they've always been a company who supports backwards compatibility the best they can, they've strived to support that all the way through WM6.5. Now we're seeing a new MS that is throwing away everything and starting from scratch with something that IMO is a junk media and social networking based OS. I really think that the iPhone OS4 is going to blow WP7 out of the water, and MS will shift their market share to 10 year olds who are getting their first "cool" cell phone. However, I think Android will eventually dominate the market. It's cheaper, it's more powerful, it's more customizable, and it's open source. It can't lose.

Re: Windows Mobile on Evo?

I like winmo6.5, I like the UI (I love titanium) and I have cooked so many 6.5 ROMs with some really awesome mods and tweaks. The drawback for me is lack fo apps/games. (now I rock android and iPhone)

having said that you have 2 major problems porting winmo

1) by the time they could port 6.5 fully working, it would be obsolete, this is a year+ long project.

2) legal issues, microsoft will not stand for that. You can see how stingy and closed they are becoming with winpho7, taking away all the freedoms we enjoy with 6.x...

your best bet is to hope they port android 2.x and 3.x to a hacked winpho7 phone and go that route if you want both.

That was my take on it too. Granted I have not used it, but I have seen videos and screenshots. Like you said "simply atrocious"

Even the WinMo 6.5 was awful. I really need 900pt font with the word "Voicemail" and a teeny tiny subscript (1) telling me there is a message taking up 25% of my screen. What a waste of space. Neeless scrolling just to "be cool" and have a touch scrolling screen.

Re: Windows Mobile on Evo?

Yeah, Android is the first UI I've seen on a phone that looks really good (with Sense), AND it's customizable and functional. For some reason, Microsoft and Apple cannot grasp this simple concept. I'll be honest, if it weren't for HTC Sense and Cookie's Home Tab mod, I would probably hate WM6.5 now that I've used Android quite a bit.
