Anyone had any luck with the GPS Photo option?

Any photo I've done with it has turned up with a lat/long/alt of 0;0;0. Doesn't give any indication of an error when taking the picture, and I take it when I've got Garmin XT locked in. Perhaps there's a reason why they disable the functionality out of the box...

Looks like it needs a reg edit. I'm not the guy to tell you what reg edit to do, but these might help.

The regedit is how you turn it on. Once it's turned on, there's an extra option for photo types, called GPS. When you select that, it says "Initializing GPS..." for awhile, then it shows a funky globe with a few bars on top of it. If you take a picture in that mode, it sticks your picture in the "My POI" folder, and there are new EXIF attributes on it (the lat/long/altitude, among others). But they're zero's, which means all my pictures have been taken in the ocean off Africa.

With regards to the links you posted, it's actually the P10 subkey you must go to, not the P9. They mention it's not working in WM6 (WTF?).

I've written a small app that takes the picture (using the HTC camera "dialog", complete with zoom functionality), and will capture the GPS information. But tying the two together has kept me busy in my evenings the last couple nights. But I'm still making progress, I think. I just want to know if I'm alone, or if it's a worthwhile exercise.

BTW, thanks for the input!

Clint, can you give a description of what this feature is exactly?

The idea is that when you take a "GPS Photo", it tags the photo with the position. So later, you can upload your pictures to Google Earth or Flickr, and other people can see exactly where you took your picture (as well as the picture). For example, when I went out to the Columbia Icefields here in the Canadian Rockies and took some pictures there, it would show exactly where I was standing when the were taken.

Oh this sounds neat!
Is this available in the camera somewhere?

That's my point. You can turn it on easily by by editing a registry key
HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P10, and set the Enable flag to 1 instead of it's current 0. Then you can pop open the camera, and go to the Capture Modes, and you'll see one called "GPS Photo".

But I've never been able to get it capture the GPS info correctly. It does tag the picture with the attributes (which aren't on the regular pictures), but they're not populated correctly.

Confirmed today, you're correct. I've been using TGPS to take photos with GPS coordinates, but if you go ahead and create a simple app to do so, I'll sure use it!
