XV6700 Touchscreen works to get into align screen wizard the freezes

I picked up a XV6700 from ebay and when I got it it was locked (with someone elses name and pin) so I did a hard reset, now it starts up, it goes into the welcome to windows mobile screen, when I tap on the screen (anywhere on the screen, it doesn't seem to matter where) it goes into the align screen wizard and then it is like the digitizer is turned off, it does not respond. First I tried cleaning the goop and lint from around the screen with a piece of paper, no change, then I tried deleting Welcome.exe, and the shortcut in the Windows\Startup folder but got an access denied error. I tried editing the registry to delete references to Welcome.exe, also access denied. I tried changing the sensitivity of the digitizer in the registry, that changed but it didn't make a difference. I also tried loading the digitizer defaults that someone else had posted, also access denied.
Somewhere along the way I tried installing MyMobile but it just sits and wont install.

Am I missing something? Is this a dead digitizer or is there something else that I can do?

I installed the APA_Verizon_31430_314208_14300_WWE_Ship_2 update (successfully) I tried to install PDAJ's version of 6.1 but the version for the 1.04 bootloader (which I have) just gave me a 120 invalid country code error.
Here is a picture of the screen that comes up when it first starts to give you the version numbers, etc.

Any ideas/suggestions? Is there something stupidly simple that I am missing?

Update: I found a remote screen alignment bypass tool here: http://www.codefactory.es/en/downloads.asp?id=108 which worked to let me get past the screen, we shall see if the digitizer is actually dead in a minute when the Verizon junk finished running.

Update 2: I circumvented the screen alignment tool and it works, but only for dragging (like when selecting the time for an appointment in the calendar) but not when "clicking" (like when selecting said appointment, or when running the screen alignment tool)

Any ideas?

That is strange. Sounds like the LCD is might bad though, if not responding to screen. Also, if you get country id error, use the guide to revert bootloader, the you cna use NoID RUU. I don't like reverting bootloaders, but if you can't flash, you might not have any other choice.

Would it be a bad LCD or a bad Digitizer? I thought that it was the digitizer that "listens" for touch on the screen

I may end up returning this, it was advertised as working, so if I can get my $$$ back and get another one I would prefer to do that rather than disassemble the phone.

Not sure...

As for the Country ID, that has nothing to do with "working", it's just something that happens, reverting bootloaders itsn't too hard...

True, the country ID has nothing to do with "working" but the digitizer not responding to "clicks" falls under the definition of "not working" or "partially working" in my book... as does the screen backlight not turning on unless the phone is plugged in.
Worst comes to worst I will get a new digitizer and/or screen, but I dont know if that will fix the backlight issue.

I have fixed the backlight issue, I went into the settings and disabled the "Turn backlight off after 30 seconds when on battery" option, hit ok, came back in and re-enabled it and it works fine now. So the only issues are the short battery life (not a big deal as I was planning on upgrading to a extended one anyway) and the dead digitizer (which from what I have read seems to be a "wear item" on this phone). I have ordered a digitizer (the 6.99 hong kong ebay special, always makes me wonder if they are making any money after the ebay fees and shipping costs) and a extended battery (with cover). Once everything is working I plan on getting a 4gb miniSD card (not SDHC) as discussed here.

How much difference is there between the copy of WM5.0 on my phone and WM6.1? Is it worth the hassel of upgrading? I was looking at the chart from MS listing the differences and didnt see all that much better/different in 6.0.

The MS chart doesn't mean nothing... we tweak stuff out here... And it is not a hasle to swap. If you see it as that then leave it alone... Again, it's all about personal preffernece.
