Re: 6700 as a tether modem
Okay, I finally got it to work by using the Wmodem file in my windows directory on my 6700 (the program wasnt listed in start-programs)... when i next plugged it in, windows saw it, and i just chose the drivers from the zip file.
however, after about 10 minutes it seems as though it stops working... i can disconnect and reconnect each time and it works again, but then 10 minutes later its not working anymore... any ideas? |

Re: 6700 as a tether modem
Don't use wmodem just do a google search for PdaNet it works great. all you need to do is connect your phone with activsync open PdaNet click connect and you will be online for as long as you want.

Re: 6700 as a tether modem
I have used my Apache to connect in many different ways and have had no problems with it. In fact, I was even able to play a few MMo's (WoW, City of heroes, Second Life) with it without trouble.
Make sure that your phone is not set to automatically power off after a certain amount of time and that you do not have any auto-lockers enabled as they can sometimes cause issues with internet connectivity. Check that it is not set to auto power off: (Go to Settings, System, Power, Advanced and unsure both boxes are unchecked). Backlight may or may not affect connection, but I recommend making sure your backlight is not set to auto turn off when connected to external power. To use Internet Connection Sharing Ensure your phone has been set up with Activesync and that you have selected 'Allow internet connections, MMS, Internet Calling' etc when you set it up. If not, set it in Activesync's options. Ensure your phone is not connected to the internet, and go to Internet Connection Sharing. Select USB, and plug the phone into your computer's USB port. Your computer will connect, sync, and then should report network connected. To use WMODEM There are modem drivers that come with the PPC Kitchen when you install it, should be located in the My Documents folder under 'Modem Drivers' (Or it may be in Program Files'). Copy them to your desktop somewhere. When you use Wmodem, make sure your phone is not connected to the internet and not connected to your computer. Also make sure you do not have any programs running that automatically connect to the internet over a period of time (Such as Email, any RSS reader or applications like that) as they may attempt to 'dial out' to the internet while it is connected, stealing the modem away from Wmodem and causing your connection to drop. Wmodem doesn't always realize this happens, and will still report it is connected sometimes, until it finally gets the hint later and will drop your connection. Start Wmodem, and ensure it has 'Connection Type: USB' selected, then press 'Start'. If all is going according to plan, 'Stop' should turn black, and you should be ready to attach to your computer. Plug your phone into your USB port. New Hardware should install, and will ask you for the drivers (If you have not installed them already). Simply point it to the folder you copied the drivers to earlier. Once that is done, you'll have to create a new modem connection. Since this isn't really a 'modem' connection like a 56k connection, it operates a little differently. Go to your connections manager in Windows, and add a new connection. Go through the setup phase, selecting 'Set up my connection manually', then Connect using a Dial-Up modem, type in your carrier name, the connection phone number (Should be #777, it may vary depending on your carrier) enter your username and password. Uncheck both of the boxes. Add a shortcut to the desktop. It should bring up the connection window. Click 'Properties' and make sure ONLY the Apache modem is selected, and not any other modems you may have installed, and click 'Configure'. Select the highest speed you can select. Hit Ok, then go to the Options tab, and uncheck Prompt for name/password and Prompt for phone number and press ok. Your computer should dial up and connect to your phone's internet. If you have connected properly and installed the drivers properly, and configured the connection properly, you should get your connection and should work fine. If you still have problems, you may need to update your modem, or your carrier may set you to automatically disconnect you if you've been connected for too long. I use Sprint, and haven't had this problem. |

Re: 6700 as a tether modem
I have tried PdaNet for a week, and I am having some problems that I'm hoping I can find a solution for.
I am getting disconnected from the Internet frequently. After a minute or so, webpages with a lot of data like Myspace or YouTube for example stop loading (usually about halfway through). Then no data is being transmitted or received at all. I have to disconnect/reconnect PdaNet to get the connection working again. Sometimes I have to reset my phone because PdaNet will not work at all unless I do. I have noticed that the same thing happens with AIM uploads/downloads, Google Maps, as well as just about every other download I've tried. About one minute in they stop, and then I'm not recieving or sending any data until I manually disconnect and reconnect. I find myself having to disconnect and reconnect 20 times each day. I can get away with leaving my IM client running on my computer, and browsing simple webpages, but that's it. No Google Maps, no Windows Updates, no downloads or uploads of any kind unless they're really small. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a solution? Thanks, John |

Re: 6700 as a tether modem
Okay... it's going to depend a lot on your settings and your carrier.
Who is your carrier?

Re: 6700 as a tether modem
I'm on Sprint's unlimited plan as well with 6.1. My PC runs windows Vista. I used the Internet Sharing app on the PDA to make it work - I've been able to stay online for hours wih no issues. You might want to try re-running the Vision setup (Phone options - Services - Internet - "Client Initiated IOTA START") this has cleared up a few odd issues I've had in the past. My internet setting is just #777 with no user name, password, or anything. Are you roaming when this happens? I get some really, really weird behavior sometimes when roaming.
The instructions posted above for internet sharing seem to be a lot more complicated than what I did - I didn't even have WMDC installed on my computer. I just opened Internet Sharing, hit "connect" and plugged it in. About 30 seconds later, the PC showed an active internet connection. Not sure if Vista already has some extra drivers or capabilities to make this work, though. Last edited by p38fln; 01-02-2009 at 01:31 AM. |
