looking for a few various registry locations. Help?

Off the top of your head, or with minimal effort.. Does anyone know where to find the following settings in the registry:

1. button lock when powered off

2. button configurations (to rebind programs bound to the keys other than the softkeys.. for example, binding opera to the IE button)

3. Start menu programs.

I realize that all of these can be changed from the settings menu, but I want to create a cab which I can put in my extrom, so that I don't have to do these things manually upon a hard reboot.

Thanks in advance for your help!

1. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\OEM\KEYBD]
"KeyLock"=dword:1
2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\] (each button is a subkey)
3. These are not registry entries. Simply add/remove shortcuts from \Windows\Start Menu to change. Note there is a strict limit of 7 links allowed. If you add more they will be deleted automatically.

The best way to find this stuff is to use a registry editor that can easily export the entire registry. Then you do an export, make the change you want to find the entry for, then export the registry again. Bring the two files over to your PC and use an app like Windiff or CompareIt to find all the changed regions. It has a little learning curve as you will see things change that are unrelated but it is a great way to learn about the registry.

It's also addicting as you will go looking for all kinds of things to "pre-customize". It's to the point now where the only thing I have to do post-hard reset is re-pair my bluetooth devices (still vexxed on finding out how to import pairing data--it's more than just reg entries).

First off, I haven't had much luck with hard-coding start menu programs. That's not to say that it can't be done, but simply adding reg entries to a .rgu doesn't seem to do it.

That being said, if you would like to find out what happens to the registry after you make a change, I suggest you use the following programs:

1) Use RegistryDump-PPC to dump the registry before the setting change. It can be downloaded here: http://dillsoft.com/index.cgi?program=RegistryDump-PPC

2) Make the desired setting change

3) Use RegistryDump-PPC to dump the registry again

4) Use Ultracompare Pro (trial) to compare the two reg dumps. Decide what should go into your cab or rgu file, and test it. It can be downloaded here:
http://www.ultraedit.com/index.php?n...download&cid=2

Have fun!

Thanks for the info guys...

I was using a program to compare the registries, but the one I used sucked.. It had a very windows 3.1 feel to it. Any chance windiff or compareit have a better interface? SOmething more logical and clean looking?

luv2chill. Thanks for pointing out the specific registry keys for me as well. it's much appreciated.

You're welcome!

Check out the one I suggested: Ultracompare Pro
http://www.ultraedit.com/index.php?n...download&cid=2

One nice feature is that once you load the two files, you can click a button that will remove all entries except for the differences.
