PR8 Beta here...

EVERYtime I open TCPMP, it switches to portrait mode, even if I am in landscape at the time (usually). Often times the TCPMP program halfway loads and hangs the device, requiring a restart (of the TCPMP program only...not the device). If I'm in portrait mode, it starts fine, and THEN I can switch to landscape. I've checked all the TCPMP settings and tried switching all the related options I could find, to no avail.

I'm running the PR8 Beta also.

I'm experiencing the same issue with TCPMP as SportbikeRiderXX. If I start in Portrait and switch to landscape it works fine. I have not however, experienced any hanging issue.

Sent this to Saridnour a few days ago. Thought I'd post it here...

This ROM seems very stable. I've experienced no lock-up issues what-so-ever. Compatibility wise I haven't ran into any problems. I use iGuidance with GPSGate and a iTrek BT GPS. These all still work fine. Similarly Mobile Golf Scorer still is working fine. The other apps I've installed and tested out include Opera mobile, Picsel, Sprite Backup, MocaVNC, Putty, NewsBreak, GetItFTP, Live Search, HandiTV, NoviiRemote. The picture dial and device status today plugins work fine on this ROM. I don't have any issues to report in any of those. I'm currently using FlexMail as my mail client. No problems there. The WiFi works with WPA and WEP networks.

I have not tried Voice Command or ADP2.

The only issue I have to report is with
1) Esmertec JRE that is preloaded in the ROM. I can't install any programs due to a null pointer exception. I think I'm probably missing some directories required for a path or something. The IBM Esmertech MIDP JRE works great still. I have tinkered with Opera mini beta 4 with no issues.

That's about it. If you have anything specific you want me to try out, let me know.

P.s the new reminder/alert sound kicks a$$

Now that you mention it, I'm having what is probably the same issue with the loaded Java program. The only thing I tried to install was Opera Mini. I get a message that says "The installer has encountered an unexpected error (java.lang .NullPointerException)"

Edit: I just tried installing all 3 Opera mini versions available (High Memory, Low Memory, and Beta versions)...all had the same error. Gonna go try to find some other Java programs to try to install. Anyone have suggestions on where to find them/what to attempt to install? I haven't played around with Java apps since exclusively using Windows Mobile powered devices for the last few years.

Since no midlets are installing at all, I'm thinking that the esmetec JRE just has a directory structure issue. E.g. it can't find the path to the correct bin or install directory. I'll try digging into it a bit more and will post if I find anything.

Edit 1
When you first startup Esmertec it creates /Window/appdb folder.

When you try and install a midlet, 2 files are created in the above directory, notify and pushlist. notify.data contains "902 User Cancelled *http://mini.opera.com/n/8462Amindnoise_int"

If I remember correctly (from the v710 java days) we should have in the appdb folder our settings, jars and selector files.

Edit 2

Tried to manually copy in a known working selector.utf and a collection of suites/jars. This did not work. Received an error from Esmertec upon startup.

Edit 3

Attempting to create a new Folder in Esmertec results in a Midlet "Lifecycle" error. After this your JVM is hosed until you clean out appdb. This create folder function however creates the selector.utf with the following
Enextroot=0
folder=Folder, \
modifiable=Y, \
removable=Y
endfolder=

Note that endfolder value isn't supplied.

Sorry I haven't commented about the new beta in awhile, I've been having some major computer issues lately, but I do want to add that I'm too having the same issues with the Java app. Granted the only thing I've tried with it is Opera Mini 3 and 4 and I'm getting the same error that everyone else is getting. Opera Mini is the only thing I would ever use Java for.

I was trying to find a solution for getting the esmertec JVM which is included in the PR8 beta working. I stumbled along a thread over at xda-developers. There's a link to a cab for a newer esmertec JVM than the one included in the PR8.

When I installed it, the included JVM files were REPLACED with the newer ones. Meaning that it didn't install a second JVM, it updated the existing one. The installer created the appdb directory and setup all the needed files.

Installation of midlets is working great with this new JVM and it seems to be more refined and integrates better wtih WM than the previous version. For example there's no longer the WM toolbar under the Java toolbar when you're in Opera Mini for example.

If you've got the Beta, grab this cab file and just run it on your phone. You're JVM will work now.

Sardinour - can we get this in the final ROM?

Here's the link to the thread where the "WM VI Black Esmertec Java.cab" is linked to.
(It's in the second post from the top)

SportbikeRiderXX/pringlet: Does the issue with TCPMP happen in other roms or in pr6?

pringlet: Ill get a comp of the new files and get them included. I am really glad you found this issue as well as a fix. I do not run any JVM apps and was not able to fully test it.

The update to the JVM may delay the release as I need some time to do the comps if I can not get all the data fron the cabs as well as get another test build out for beta. Will try to get to this as soon as I can just been busy re-working the reusme. I work contract (Software test eng.) and it's that time again to find a new gig.. So maybe a new beta by Monday and maybe a public after my trip??

Saridnour, I have never seen TCPMP do this to the screen orientation in any other ROM (any version of yours or any other I've played around with).

Also worth noting is that if I'm using the TCPMP program in landscape mode and then exit the program, it switches my device to portrait mode. It seems that upon opening/closing TCPMP, if your in landcape mode at the time, it will switch you to portrait mode. It opens/closes normally if in portrait mode at the time.

I might be coming back...

I'm currently running my own cooked up rom.
I love having everything install from a hard reset, and only the programs I use on the device.
This weekend, I used my wife's phone for a bit, she's still on PR6, and WOW!!!
Her phone is much more responsive.
Once PR8 is released, I'll gladly flash my phone w/ it to test it out.
I like all the free space I have now w/ my programs installed, but if they're slow and unresponsive, what's the point of all that extra room.

Looking forward to your next release.

Thanks.
