I think he is talking more about going from WM6.1 to WM5 and the BL version has changed which keeps him from going back. Thus he will have to downgrade the BL version first.

Upgrade to 6.1 shouldn't have changed his bootloader. Worst case is to run the newest vzw aku that puts 2.05 bootloader on your phone which will work even if he has bootloader 2.05 already (assuming vzw). If we can find out what bootloader version and carrier for sure it will be easy to revert him back to wm5 and try to keep a better bootloader intact if its 2.02 or lower. I sent him a pm to try to find out the details.
