sounds great, if you guys can give me some contents i'll be more than happy to port it over to the wiki. I know i've been having a hell of a time folowing the ROM conversations and quite frankly I don't have the time to browse through 20-30 page threads
give me some links to specific posts (not just entire threads) and i'll get on it. X

If nobody else is willing to write up a ROM kitchen tutorial, I might be able to find some time over the next couple of days to scribble one up... but chances are that if you can find somebody else, it'd get done faster.

I have been getting together the list and description of everything in my rom. I will get that up as well. It's nice for people to actually know what's in the rom and what it does.

nice ideas...I know the faq would be useful since all ROMs are loaded the same way. And most users have the same ?s. So I may throw together some of the most common ?s I've seen asked and shot them to ya xarves. As always the wiki is open for all members to edit and add useful info to so feel free to do so. :P (wiki.ppcgeeks.com) for those that don't know

I've started working on the ROM kitchen page. It's not complete, but I should be able to get some more written tomorrow. So far, it sketches out why you would want to to it, the tools you'll need, and the rough workflow involved. I'll probably scribble up the layout of a package, how to generate your own OEM package, a list of what can easily be excised without penalty, along with some useful tips. It'll also probably end up folding the existing OEM howto page into it, and I'll probably split off the OEM list on that page into a separate page, combining it with Schettj's list.

As a aspiring new kitchen user and one who is not all that knowledgeable when it comes to terms, I would like to make the suggestion that while this is being compiled, please spell out as best you can the definitions of an action. I make this suggestion for I believe that the more complete the instructions / FAQs are, the less questions that will be asked from people like me! For example, when an instruction reads as follows:
1. Extract X.file Most people who are eager to build wonder 2 things: 1. How do I extract this and what (most users are looking for free!) programs do I use? 2. What is X? In my own knowledge building (which has been at a nice pace, thanks to everyone in these forums!), it took me some time to figure out just what a nk.nbf file was and how to extract the radio, the extended rom, and the OS from an official AKU update. I know that everyone here is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and that time is a very valuable and scarce commodity some days. I figured that I would give you a little insight in what a more noob user is thinking. That being said, if you all would like me to help in 'noobifying' the instructions & FAQs for and in the wiki, I think that this is something that could greatly help the user community out! Once again, thanks everyone for their time and effort! |

The ROM kitchen page now explains what the different files in an OEM package are, as well as a somewhat lengthy explanation of how to build your own OEM package. It's not totally comprehensive, but it should serve as a pretty good starting point of how to do it. It uses WM5torage as an example, because it's a fairly basic package that still uses all of the different architectural components to install.

That really helps. Yesterday I used the ROM Kitchen page and was able to cook the 3.5 ROM and it works flawlessly on my phone. Now that the OEM part has really been laid out, I will start to add my own programs. Can't thank you guys enough for really making the instructions a snap!
