Phone freezes when I answer a call....

When I click the answer button to answer a call, the phone sometimes just freezes and the main popup call window never pops up, but the small answer and disconnect windows appears to be stuck in limbo at the bottom of the screen.
I tried uninstalling programs and clearing out cache and so forth but nothing works, phone still gets stuck when trying to answer a call.
The extra rings is the only thing that appears to help at times otherwise I wouldn't be able to catch the call before it goes to voicemal.

any help would be appreciated...

Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

I forgot to mention, the phone is set under the power options to turn itself off when it's not being used and that is usually when I have issues - when it wakes up to catch a call.
I don't think I have enough battery to leave the phone on continuously, and obviously the settings should work if they are preprogrammed into the power options in the phone.
Sometimes, even when the phone is on, I may still have problems answering calls, but mostly when the phone tries to wake itself up.

Any ideas, or tweaks for this ?

Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

I had this problem a couple of times when I first received my VX-6700. It turns out that I was placing data (in my case caller ID photos) and even ringtones on my SD card. When the phone started ringing, it would take several seconds (as long as 20 seconds) before the phone would become responsive enough to let me answer the phone. I took all of my Today Plugins (SPB Insight), caller ID photos, and ringtones and put them back into the phone's main storage.... I haven't had a problem since... I believe it's related to the fact that the phone disables the SD card as a power saving feature...and it takes it a bit to wake up and discover what's on the card.

Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

I agree with DougWare, anything application, ringtone or CallerID picture that is stored on the card and NOT in main memory will cause issues like what you are describing and more so when you mention that fact of it happening when the device is 'waking up' and calling on the card for data. There are hacks to improve the stabilty and transfer rate of the card reader (some cards work better/faster than others). I have a .cab file that I picked up many many moons ago that does these for you automatically instead of you doing the manual reg edits yourself. But even with that there are still some issues. Bottom line is to remove any plugins on the Today screen that are apps installed on the card and move all ringtones and pics into main memory and see if that resolves your issue.

Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

Hi,

Thanks for the info, and could you post those hacks or cabs file so that I could see if they would help my situation.
Next, I've been doing a little research myself and found that if I remove the unused IE cache, history, and temp files using "Pocket Mechanic", the phone will function normally and not freeze on calls. In addition, I used the "Advanced configuration" utility to disable the Caching of IE files as well as lowering my file cache size from 32k to 18k.
I don't have to delete the unused files as frequent, and the cache file sizes themselves are very small compared to before.
I ended installing everything that I could on the phone instead of the Mini-SD card, leaving only a few programs and lots of data files on the storage card. I have 13.7 mb of both storage and program memory available on the phone and it functions fine. Also, I should note that this is a replacement phone since my original was "bricked" a few months back.
Could I possibly be running out of memory on the phone ? I have uninstalled all unnecessary programs just to get to this point.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated....

Thanks

Angry Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

Forgot to mention, I can only answer calls "perfectly" after the 2nd ring only. The phone will always freeze up if I try to answer on or during the 1st ring. I changed the SSC settings using phone code -> 776, and modem settings to "2" which seems to be the best setting for answering calls otherwise making the setting larger will not give me enough rings to be able to answer calls and maybe not be able to answer on the 1st ring either so I would rather have more rings and not be able to answer on the 1st ring....

Here is a link to the hacks. Make sure you back everything up before getting into them and make sure you do one at a time and reboot after each one so you can see accurately how it affects your phone. If you do several at the same time and something goes wrong then you will not know which one caused the issue.

Most people increase thier cache sizes to assist in speeding up the PPC. Decreasing the cache may have adverse effects as it cannot store and recall that data as fast and may have to have that extra time to re-pull fresh data. If you are using up all your memory then that could cause the issue you say you are experiencing and that though comes from when you say after you run your memory manager you no longer get those same lockups.

I know you say you have 13mb of space but is that also at the same time you are getting these lock ups?

What all apps do you have installed on the card?

Answering fine after the second call may go back to the original thought of the device taking a few secs to pull some data from the card and waiting for the card to respond from being 'asleep'. Many many people have had issues with this (including myself). So again, what all apps/ringtones/callelID pics are on your card? Make sure there are NONE there and that ALL are in MAIN memory.

Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

By any chance are you using a data connection for ActiveSync? I'm having the same problem with the phone freezing and I know it is related to ActiveSync but I don't have a solution yet.

Unhappy Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

Actually, I think I might have an issue with a utility called "SafeMode" by monocube. I flashed my phone with the latest rom but didn't remember the key for the old version of "SafeMode" so I had to buy, download and install the new version and I suspect that might be where my problem is if I can recall.
The utility operates like Windows safemode and allows a means of accessing the phone is case you load a program that doesn't work correctly.
The phone worked just fine with the old version software and rom, and prior to flashing with the new or latest rom. The key for the old version of "safemode" was actually free and posted on the download site but it has since been removed since the new version of the software was introduced. In addition, I had all of my programs installed on my storage card - 2 gig at the time, with no problems. Now I have a new 4 gig card with hardly anything on it, with most everything installed on the phone memory itself except for a couple of programs. The phone is loaded with as much stuff as I could install on it if you catch my drift. I kept checking memory and recompiling the rom till I could get most everything to fit, and then loaded the rest of what wouldn't fit in the rom manually after I flashed the phone.
I'm back tracking and that's when I can recall my problems beginning with the phone freezing up during calls since I had no problems prior to that.

As far as ActiveSync, I keep that disabled unless I want to connect to my PC with the phone, and of course it doesn't work right anyway by not updating my contacts on the computer the way it is supposed to.

Thanks

Smile Re: Phone freezes when I answer a call....

Might be getting close now. This is my 2nd 4 gig mini-sd card btw. The first was a hc sd card which kept getting corrupted and acting like it was being ejected all the time.
I just thought of what was mentioned earlier about the items in the today screen....I have a lot of quick launch programs on my today menu !!!! and some of them are stored on the storage card so I have removed them from the menu altogether.
Step by step, maybe I'll have this problem fixed soon I hope or else reload this phone "once again".....
