Jim, the automatic gmail setup was changed in the 20071107_2 version of the kitchen back to the default way, which is using POP3. In the first two revisions of the kitchen (20071105 and 20071107_1) I had changed it to use the new IMAP functionality by default.
The reason I reverted it back to POP3 is because gmail's IMAP functionality currently has problems with the Windows Mobile e-mail client in which many messages are completely blank (no content) on the device. I'm sure they will get it corrected on their end in time, but meanwhile to cause less problems for people I changed it back so that it once again uses POP3 servers to set up a gmail account (that would be the default on any WM6 device on the market). However, you can absolutely override the auto setup and use whatever servers you like... when you're setting up a new e-mail account there is an option for that on the screen where it asks for your e-mail address. Uncheck the box that says "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet". |

Thanks for the responses. I do have both Outlook and the PPC set up to leave messages on the server.
I did use "Try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet" when I set up the Gmail account, but I don't see IMAP in the PPC's Gmail settings: Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com Account type: POP3 Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: smtp.gmail.com My preferred setup is to view new Gmails on my phone when I'm out, but be able to view them more than once, and then be able to download these emails to my Outlook when I get home. Are you saying that In order to get back to this behavior, I should set up Gmail to use IMAP? |

it sure is taking google a while to get the imap functionality rolled out to all users, i've been waiting since it launched and by the looks of it, even if i had the functionality they still havent ironed out a few issues....

Try using a username of "recent:jsmith@gmail.com" on the phone and in Outlook. I had this exact same problem when I switched to WM6 and this solved the problem. I found it on Google's help site under the Mobile Email section.

Not to be too pushy, but I am leaving for a 12 day tour of Europe in a few hours and would like to get this resolved while I'm still on this side of the pond. Not being able to download 12 days of email to my PC when I get home would be very frustrating. |

I had this problem also. I just set the username in Outlook as well as on the phone to have the "recent:" at the beginning and my phone will check emails and outlook will also download them. I do not have "leave on server" checked.

IMAP would work fine... downside is, for some html emails, you *still* might not see the message bodies in WM6 (still not fixed, last I checked http://groups.google.ki/group/Gmail-...a906d95fdd8745 )
