Just to clarify, helmi's WM6 ROM and all of verizonguys ROMs/kitchens, as well as any of Helmi's kitchens beginning with revision 20071107_2 all use the "normal" POP3 method for setting up Gmail.
The only two releases which had the IMAP setup (which doesn't work properly) are the initial (20071105) and first revision (20071107_1) of Helmi's kitchen.
So unless you were building your own ROM from one of those two kitchens then your gmail account was set up using POP3.
