is it possible to replace the joystick with a dpad?

I've owned my xv6700 for a few months and I've had really one grievance with it(besides that its 10x slower than my dads 6600 due to wm5,wm6 running on rom)
THE JOYSTICK!
I thought that it just was broken by its previous owner, but lately I've found out that this is a reoccurring issue with many 6700's.
Is it possible to somehow DIY a dpad to replace that joystick?

the joystick, four top soft keys and send/end are all on the same board.

you can pick up broken 6700s on ebay. (for parts)

opening isnt hard at all, neither is dis assembely.

just gotta have the star screw set... lol

good luck,

Known issue. Verizon will replace it, go to a verizon store complain a bit, tell them you have read about numerous people having the same problem and how verizon and sprint replace them.

Also go to the store near where rich snooty people live.
For some reason those store's give less hassle. Maybe cause rich people bitch way to often and for no reason.

I had to get my phone replaced for the same reason as you. And i did what i said above.

Oh and an example of how the people are at that type of stores i mention.
When i was waiting in line. 3 people in front of me where bitching that the ringer was broken and wanted a full refund and how they were going to sue.

The guy behind the counted pressed the raise volume key on the side told the morons the do need to raise the volume and sent them on there way.
But the best was a girl maybe 22 Blonde of course. Was saying here Chocolate was broken and wouldn't turn on. and that she bought it last week. Guy open up the battery took off a plastic on a battery and turned the phone on. I shit you not.

To answer your question, yes it is technically possible.
It would also be prohibitively expensive to do it right.
If you were going to engineer a d-pad replacement and sell it to a few hundred thousand people, you could make some cash though.

good idea but

only problem is the apache wont take more then one keypress at a time. anykey-- including joystick and softkeys. not too big a deal, but the apache wont replace a psp or ds anytime soon because of this. running and jumping it platform games is hard. shooting and running etc.

plus the joy stick is a 4-way not an 8-way like all video games since 1970 are.

sucks cause i was hoping with the 6800 this would be addressed but i think its still a 4-way joystick.

if there is a way to do it, that i dont know of, then I too would be a customer of a d-pad addon.

when i play games in 'widscreen' on the apache use the 4-way as the dpad and the record, volumeup, volume down, and 'e' button as A, B, X, Y
closes to a Snes controller layout as I can get. fyi.
