The usb port is not working. Check device manager for errors on the port. Use a different usb port. Use a different cable.

BUT, after I restored using SPB Backup on my phone without a pin, it reboots to a complex password screen, and I cannot get in due to "invalid password". Tried it twice and hard reset is the only way... I even tried with the "do not reset device password" option checked in SPB before restoring. I also tried just restoring a couple of simple files, without checking the system or reg boxes. Now I'm afraid that using the backup utility is near useless because I'll need to hard reset the changes away, and am wary of testing any other products like sunnysoft or sprite in case the issue is with the kitchen and not the backup utils.

Any thoughts?
It's unlikely to be solely a WM6/kitchen issue, if it's partly a WM6/kitchen issue at all. Given your testing, it sounds like it's the application. Give the others a shot. I recommend you try creating and restoring a backup right after a hard reset, so you don't actually lose anything if it doesn't work.

You might also try disabling passwords before you make your backup and/or do a restore.

Yeah I did have my PW disabled. The restore process CREATED an unknowable password out of thin air. Ugly.

Seen and responded to in original thread. Cross posting wasn't (and never is) necessary.

I have experienced similar problems and it has nothing to do with the Kitchen. It appears that XP does not recognize the phone. My problem would be hit ad miss, no problems and then Device Not Recognized. After installing the USB Modem driver for tethering the problem has gone away. Did you turn off ActiveSync before flashing your ROM? I believe my problems started after I flashed without shutting down ActiveSync.

I believe that the problem is you need to copy the dll file from Kitchen Root/Tools labeled:"msvcr71.dll".. It gets placed here "C:\WINDOWS\system32" on your computer. It is an Microsoft Runtime File.

Reinstalling claunch in Extended ROM makes it work.
Claunch still disappears often. I only use a custom big digital clock with RLToday, Claunch, and Calendar +[Optional_J_Calendar+_v25261002(6-15-07)]. (Well, PHM TrayLaunch to keep stuff out of the tray.)
Didn't happen with earlier Kitchens.
