Updated the first post to include limera1n as well as changing some things including jailbreaking iPhone 3G on 4.1

Okay, I am running 4.1 with baseband 1.59...Do i stiill need to do sssblob thing and the ssh thing? I'm a little confused. I dont see why i would need to downgrade at all.

If i mess something up can I just restore through itunes and be good as new or should i do an erase all data?

Just follow the directions but back up everything first.

You can't downgrade on an iPhone 4, but every firmware version can be jailbroken. You cannot unlock with that baseband, that's the only reason the baseband even matters at this point. you would only need to back up your SSH blob if you accidentally upgraded to a higher firmware version and had no way to jailbreak, but now your phone is "jailbroken for life" since these new exploits are boot-rom level

oh and yes if anything goes wrong you can always restore thru iTunes and jailbreak it again.

Thanks! I dont need to unlock anyway. I just remember reading that you needed to ssh in order to theme. Is that true?

SHSH Blob and SSH are 2 different things.

Saving your SHSH Blob means basically saving a copy of your Apple signed OS on Saurik's server (the guy who owns and runs Cydia). This enables you to downgrade sometimes when you accidentally upgrade an OS to a non-jailbreakable version. While you may still want to do this, having a jailbreak that can jailbreak ANY new version of your current phone (until they make hardware changes on new phones) makes it not as important.

edit: since iOS 4.1.1 is on the way, it apparently patches part of the new jailbreak. GeoHotz used some of Comes's code to make the jailbreak untethered (meaning you don't have to connect the phone to your PC every time you restart it), but 4.1.1 patches that, so you can still jailbreak it, but it will be tethered, so log into Cydia now and back up your SHSH blob. You can also use Tinyumbrella.

SSH (or Secure Shell) is a way to get into your phone once it is jailbroken by basically using an SCP client (pretty much like using an FTP client to upload/download files) to "hack" into your own iPhone.

This allows you to place certain folders in your phone that Winterboard can then recognize and theme your phone. It IS necessary to SSH into your phone to put these awesome themes on there. The instructions on how to do this have not changed and you can find them in the first post in this thread, it's actually pretty easy.

Hey orangekid,

As I already told you in the other thread. We've got a 4.0.2 firmware on the iphone4. It is locked to AT&T.

As ive been reading, if i upgrade to 4.1 which will affect baseband and will not allow to unlock the phone.

So can you guide me to the right procedure to finally have a working iphone 4 because this us driving crazy lol.

So will GreenPoison allow us to unlock and jailbreak? although that is not what i understood from it

both limera1n and greenpo1son jailbreak 4.02 on iPhone 4, download and use either one, then open cydia and install ultrasn0w to unlock

so all i have to do is install Greenpo1son and then open cydia and install ultrasn0w to unlock.... PERFECT....So no need to open 4.1
