This is a very good reason why Win7 IS backwards compatible.

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

I see this as a good thing. MS is no longer putting a new shade of lipstick on the ole' pig. This means WM7 is a clean sheet design, and won't be held back by having to support old legacy apps. Like others have mentioned, MS may make an emulator to allow the old apps to run. But most smartphone users are not power users like we are. They probably didn't use a previous WM device, or if they did, they weren't downloading apps, cabs, flashing roms, etc. There are plenty of users who are brand loyal, and will stick with MS, no matter what. Same with Android/Palm/Apple. The rest, which comprises the bulk of cell phone users, couldn't care less about what OS is running their phone. They just want something that is easy to use, and gives them a fun experience. And if it looks nice, well that's just a bonus. As long as WM7 is the 3 things I just described above, they will have a hit. Plus, WM 6.5.X (6.6?) is becoming a much more finger friendly os, so business users/loyal MS followers can use that, and all their old apps will be right there waiting for them.

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

i also think this is a good thing, like its been said this means its a clean slate and the new os wont be so old and "square looking" and the apps will be crisp and "rounded" if that makes sence. the old windows apps if looked at look like old dated software. maybe the new apps w the os will be crisp and new age looking. it makes sence in my head but i dunno if ive might have confused a few. lol

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

Hate to be the bearer of bad news? lol But I think this rumor is false.

Information I'm receiving says it runs 6.x apps so long as they are the same resolution.

Trying to get something more solid on this, but I don't think it's going to be a big deal.

I personally think this is just a rumor myself. Don't think MS could afford to pull a move like this one, this late in the game at least.

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

It will be based on Windows CE. Even the Zune HD is Windows CE at it's core. It will be binary compatible, no doubt about that. There's no way MS develops a new kernel for WinMo 7.

Now will everything work? Probably not. I'm sure they'll have a new sensor SDK and probably a new location system. There will likely be gesture support, etc. Not sure if they'll support WinForms. If they don't it will break a ton of apps. Honestly I don't see why they wouldn't. Winforms will no doubt be a component of Windows CE 7 (there's no way they ditch it entirely as enterprise/embedded apps will no doubt still use it). That doesn't mean they will use Winforms in their interface. I wouldn't be surprised if it is XNA driven with some variant of Surface API's thrown in for gestures. They'll probably support XNA for development, similar to Zune HD if not the same exact code/APIs as the Zune HD. Basically I'm thinking there will be a LOT of copy/pasting from the Zune HD to WinMo 7 except WinMo will retain full .net compact framework support.

As for the rumors about 2 versions... the "enterprise" version will probably just be WinMo 6.5/6 or whatever number they feel like giving it while WinMo7 will be based on CE 6 or 7 (WinMo 6.5 is still based on CE5 while ZuneHD is 6). CE7 will be out later this year so they may just go ahead and use that.

Yep. If they did drop BC, that would be an epic foot bullet to the progress MS has made establishing it as a mainstream platform. So.. start over and be Waaaaaay behind iphone and droid? They can't be that stupid!

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

Definitely a suicidal move if they killed BC. It sure didn't work for Palm. I don't really see what's so terrible about legacy WinMo anyway, I dunno why everyone keeps crowing for a 'new & improved' OS(AKA an iPhone/Android clone). If you want shiny & pretty, get an iPhone or an Android phone. If you want robust power, versatility, and hackability, go WinMo.

Re: Early WinMo 7 not compatable w/ our current apps

Its funny Iam trying to figure out how this rumor started? Microsoft said some new games and apps will be made with Netcompactframework4.0 . So if WP7 support netcompactframework, why would it not be backward compatible. I did research on this as Iam a developer myself
