Let me remind you of what the NEXT sentence was in your post, after you talked about losing respect for a company...

How far do they really need/deserve to be protected for their intellectual property?
Yeah, that bit was confusing me, since clearly you were implying that not respecting a company means you don't need/deserve to protect their intellectual property. Silly me, I thought you were implying you'd happily steal from those people.

Hey, what can I say. I'm easily confused by those kinds of statements.

Actualy in my reply to you I said I can understand how you could be confused by my statement, I posted in haste, and was not clear, so didn't mean to disrespect you on that one, my point (not very well made) in the original post was that since Garmin dropped the program, stopped supporting it, just let it go by the wayside why should/does that software (The software that was dropped by Garmin, meaning no longer supported, no longer developed) deserve to be protected, I mean if Garmin let it go by the wayside wats the point.

The point is, that doesn't matter. Unless/Until Gamin releases it into the public domain, it's not free. Hence, it is protected.

I'm starting to see your thinking I guess. I live in a place where even though the roads really need upgrading they don't get it. so maybe for year old maps won't cut it for you.
I think a gps company should either
A: update a device for a good long time, building them in such a way that they can be updated easily along side with their modern cousins
or
B: make it crystal clear when they sell a device that its life is gonna end fairly soon. Or even stop selling it once it seems clear the next thing has a release date in a year or so.

But they didn't do that, and that sucks. It is what it is. Tell your story to anyone who actually BOUGHT Windows Vista, they will laugh in your face. Or how about anyone who bought an HD2 right before Microsoft confirmed it would never get a WP7 upgrade! They sure could have told us that before we bought the damn phone.

Sometimes companies don't do what you want or think they should do, but that does not excuse breaking the law or infringing copyright protection.

You got a few good years use out of the program, now it's time to part ways.

Re: You, Me, Companies that don't really care, and Warez!?

Man I can't believe how some here have missconstrued this thread to think that it is/was to condone steeling, I never said that one time, and I never intended it to be construed that way, the "Warez" in the title was because I had, in another post, been tagged as supporting steeling, and was chastized for it by manigment, I covered that in the first post, a couple of the replys put me on the defencive, and I shouldn't have bit on that one, my point is in my opinion these companies don't deserve support, they don't deserve respect, they don't deserve to be in business, and until we start not supporting them, and let me make this clear one more time THIS IS NOT JUST GARMIN BUT EVERY COMPANY, PERSON, WHAT EVER WHO TREAT THE COMSUMER LIKE WE ARE JUST THERE TO IMPROVE THEIR BOTTOM LINE, now I understand that they are in business to make money, but I buy a product intending to get my moneys worth out of it, some I do and some I don't, just tired of the ones that I don't, so drop the your condoning steeling, no, no I'm not, I am in a business that produces a product and is supposed to be protected by intelecual property laws, sadly I have people steel from me on a regular basis, but does that mean that I stop giving my customers their moneys worth, or giving them a product that has a usful lifespan and actualy lives up to that, I don't think so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

Re: You, Me, Companies that don't really care, and Warez!?

One more note:
The latest .img map files from Garmin will work with Garmin mobile XT, I emailed them more then once practicly begging them to sell me those .img files, I was not asking for updated POI information, I was not asking for TTS files, just updated maps that's all, and like I said they have the files, and they do work but they just told me nope, sorry you waisted your money but we don't care, just to be clear that was not exactly their words they where mine, but you get the point.
Terry

May I direct you to the topic title you selected?

Yeah.

If you tell us you are a duck, don't be surprised if we expect you to quack. If you really want to get mad, be mad at Microsoft, who in one quick move made all of your windows mobile software obsolete.

Yay. Progress.

Re: You, Me, Companies that don't really care, and Warez!?

I see this guys point. If they stop support for the software the least they can do if give him access to buy the updated maps. How freekin hard is that??? So what is a guy to do, well you go to bittorrent and bootleg them..not saying this is right, nor is he, but I think the point is this company is setting themselves up for "warez" when they could have actually made some money selling him some new maps. This is the problem with entire pda software industry and why everybody is moving to an "app store" concept to try and control this as best as possible, much like the MP3 and napster BS and what it has evolved into today. GPS software has been the worst, its much easier to find bootleg maps than it is to find ones you can buy.

Isnt the solution here (or sortoff solution) to use the internet to handle licenses. Much like windows handles OS licenses.
