Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

I jumped on to the Evo because of the better hardware and speed hoping with all the Android momentum it would be good on the software side for the productive stuff as well as the fun stuff.

I am seeing more and more of all the familiar names from my brief TP and TP2 flashing days of Winmo. I really liked Winmo because of it's direct ties with the PC OS. I liked the "seamless" integration with all the office stuff and the years of things that work with it like much better video player support. I just tried to cover up and ignore the lag when comparing it to friends Iphones. There's were smooth but I could actually do so much more besides novelty apps. With the 3rd party offering for home screen/launchers 6.5 for me was pretty good. It was the hardware that seemed to bog it down.

So what's everyones take on the topic? Did you jump to Android for the hardware or OS or both? I guess I gave in to my video card stance between ATI and Nvidia...whichever offers the best bang for the buck and does what I want it to do gets my pick.

Sorry mods, didn't mean to post in the wrong place.

Re: Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

Honestly it is both, the Evo hardware is nice and it definitely helps everything out. In the end Android will keep you around though. It is a nice OS and has some great apps.

Re: Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

Yep. Both. Except for the HD2, there really isn't a WM phone with decent hardware, from a processor/ram/rom perspective. My main reason for switching was for the capacitive screens. WM didn't have anything, and everything with android was capacitive. I don't have to push and drag like I did with WM. It's just swipe and done. That alone made my experience with my phone so much better.

Me and a co-worker got the EVO at the same time. I didn't want to switch from WimMo but I was waiting for quite some time to get a new phone and Sprint couldn't come close of course to anything matching the EVO in a Win Mo device. The internet experience and response time of applications are just fantastic. On the other hand I have had to compromise on the functionallity of the programs "I" use. Truth is while I love my EVO I will be looking to go back to WinMo depending on what Sprint offers in the future and what Win 7 can do.

Yeah, I was thinking the same as well. Would be great to have a dual boot scenario and have the best of both if that was ever possible.

Yeah, I was kind turned off by no stylus for pinpoint touch but after using the Evo I didn't really need it. If I do I did find there is a capacitive stylus made anyway. It took a second to adjust to my TP2 screen when getting it ready to ship off to my brother. Only then did I notice how hard you had to push on the screen. lol, I always had a harder time after the nail clippers.

Hardware. I hate the on-screen keyboard, I type 2 letters an hour with extreme accuracy. I hate the search feature coming up when my finger is no where near the search button. I hate its Bluetooth implementation. It fast though.

Re: Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

I agree both, but the OS helps out a LOT. I wish it had a keyboard as I just like it a lot more than screen only. I just got my TP replaced with a TP2 and although I haven't been able to set it up the way I like it (windows classic interface, with SPB phone suites) I can tell its a major improvement over TP. Kinda what a TP should have been. It seems quicker, has a better screen and (some say, not me) better keyboard.

The evo is fast, extremely responsive and really has the right screen size for me. I might like bigger, but it works for me. The os is also good and provides me an opportunity to create some programs for it. So that's also a huge +. Having had the Hero, i didn't want to do anything for it because its slow and unresponsive.

Re: Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

I didn't make a note of the article but I did hear that one of the next Sprint WinMo phone (Win 7) would have a 4.5 in screen. Although some will love it, they are getting out of my size comfort zone.

Re: Why the jump to Android? Hardware or OS

I am going android because pretty much I got no choice....while hardware plays a role winmo was merged back into the embedded tree and lost a lot of the development ....so this leaves me with only option to go Android on the Epic 4g once its out...
