Dual-Boot 2 Rom in 1?

would it be possible to take 2 roms and combine them with a ui at startup that lets you choose between the two?

i know its a longshot but you can dualboot on a pc, so why not its mobile buddy?

or if you could take all the files that are flashed to the rom normally and put them in a designated folder on sd for the 2nd rom. in other words, you could have say a conflipper rom on your main rom and have a juicy or mighty rom on your sd and choose which you want to boot at startup?

i highly doubt this will turn up any REAL results but it would be so amazing that i would buy a dev a lot of coffee if they made this into a reality, even though its probably just a dream, but hell MLKJ had a dream and now obama is president so who knows

Negative, only can kind of do that with Android images, and that is after you boot into WMO. I did it on my old Titan.

Re: Dual-Boot 2 Rom in 1?

you mind me asking why this can't be done with windows mobile?

and i know that android runs on top of winmo after its booted.

im looking to run 2 winmos not simultaneously but seperately as in having a choice between 2 diff roms to boot up when you press the power button

Re: Dual-Boot 2 Rom in 1?

Of course it's possible, just not very pointful - easier to keep both images on SD and flash between them when you want to switch. Fundamentally, multi-boot selectors work by directing the bootstrap process among different partitions. ROMs have their code arranged neatly in partitions, so the same concept would conceivably work. Unlike your PC (which has near limitless hard drive space) phone's have relatively tiny flash space - so the gain would come with a lot of pain. Conceivably you could boot from SD, but that would be even more of a departure from existing code.

Nue had this on the Mogul. You would choose the ROM you wanted in Settings and it would reboot to your nue ROM. I liked it.

Re: Dual-Boot 2 Rom in 1?

With 512MB of flash space, I would think it would be possible. I wouldn't mind having a 6.1 ROM and a beta 6.5 ROM available depending on my needs. ROM images take ~100MB

Re: Dual-Boot 2 Rom in 1?

Gguruusa has it. Possible? Yes. Easy? No.

My understanding is you'd need to modify the bootloader to repartition the ROM to have 2 separate CE images. Then you'd need to mod the bootloader so you can choose which one you want on boot. Perhaps one could be default and the second, less used one could be autoloaded when you do a keypress on booting like you do for hard reset or bootloader mode.

Additionally I think provisions would have to be made for flashing so you know which os you are currently flashing.

It sounds like a lot of work to me and would be a something above what the average rom chef is capable. You'd need to crawl on your hands and knees to the likes of cmonex and olipro with some very generous use of their donate buttons to even have a snowballs chance in hell.

i figured i'd be buying someone a lot of coffee for this to be possible
but right now i have 344mb out of 512mb free with mightymike4.7.2 rom for storage and thats after i've installed all my customs and programs. it seems like it'd be hard but as soon as i get the money saved, i'll look into getting this done.. thanks for all the answers to this post. and if any devs that could possibly and would be willing to do this with the right amount of donations to the cause see this post, please let me know, it might be a good minute before i get the funds, but i would love to be able to dual boot, so its worht it to me

and i dont like flashing back and forth between roms i like because then i have to customize it the way i like it each time and most of what i have isn't in cabs so i have to copy files manually that i want to change which is a little bit of a pain so if i could dual boot i'd be able to just switch b/t my fav two roms and they already be customized.. this is the benefit of the dual boot

Oh I can totally see the benefit. Just imagine having your standard rom all set up and untouched while you flash the lastest unstable new rom for testing. It would be great to have.
