Ken ... A few reports of people d/l directly with somewhat mixed results. Calk put together a rooted version of the update over at xda ... seems fine, although I'm waiting on you.

No. The backup in ROM Manager is a NAND backup, if you restore that you will be back on the previous version, as you left it. It is a failsafe in case something goes wrong with the new flash or you just want to jump back to the old version easily.
OMJ posted instructions on how to pull the data image from that backup and restore that. I think like he does, that that is the same as not wiping your data prior to flashing so I dont do it. Could be wrong on that.
I'd look at an app like Titanium Backup to save your settings to take from one ROM to another.

Edit: OMJs restore instructions:

I attempted to apply the update on your ROM (version 1.4) when it told me there was an update available. It downloaded okay, but once I allowed it to reboot to apply the update, it failed to install.

It rebooted, and then started to install, but in the very beginning when it was "verifying system software" (or something like that) it simply failed and kicked me back to the recovery menu options. I simply rebooted and was brought back to Android as if nothing ever happened.

Not me. I am hiding in the Upgrades subforum to spare myself the surplus of duplicate OTA fixed my battery life threads in the main forum.

I'll be happy when you get to it of course.

I flashed the rooted 1.47.651.1 rom just to check it out, everything seems to be working ok. I verified it is rooted. I ran a couple speed tests, and was getting better speeds. hopefully I'll have a updates rom soon.

Awesome Ken. Where you able to get the new radio flashed as well? My understanding is this rooted rom didnt have the latest radio unless of course you updated ota. lol.

Yea Pandora froze on me last night, and due to my TP/winmo developed habits, I got really frustrated and ended up freezing my whole phone....battery out and it was good again...haven't tried Pandora again until you just reminded me; all good so far!
