AGPS = ability to get an instant ballpark position as soon as you open Google Maps
GPS = choose use GPS and then after 5-10 seconds it will connect and get a more accuratae location

I finally figured out how to make my AGPS work. I am using the latest ROM OMJ released (the 6.5.5 one) with Google Maps 4.0 installed to the storage card. I also had that Aloqa program installed. I ran the Aloqa program first and it uses GPS and Wifi/CellID so it turns on your wifi and data connection. I turned off the GPS function and it still found my location. I then went to Google Maps and it found my location with no GPS turned on. My Location in Sense actually found my weather location too for the first time ever. The kicker seems to be the Wifi. It has to be turned on to work, but NOT necessarily connected to anything, just on. I have no idea why this is but if I turn wifi off, I get no location.

When I open google maps, without enabling gps (default is off), it instantly shows my location within 1000m. The exact version is 3.2.1 (#16).

Now whether it does this because a) it's cooked into the rom, b) it's version specific, c) some other ROM issue, - I don't know. Hopefully someone can figure this out. Does anyone have a cab for Google Maps 3.2.1 (#16)? That way I could install it on the most recent ROM and see if the functionality is there (then we know it's the specific version granting us this function).

EDIT: Ok I found version 3.2.1 (#17)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=13

and it has the same functionality on the "Sense 2.5 6.5.3 28014 v1.6" ROM. Time to flash the current ROM.

EDIT:

Also tried Google Maps version 4.0.0 (#81) and it works in the same way on "Sense 2.5 6.5.3 28014 v1.6", so it doesn't seem to be version specific.

FINAL EDIT:

Flashed back to the most recent ROM "Sense 2.5 2012 6.5.5 23541 v1.1", enabled location service, installed Google Maps 4.0.0 (#81) to device, and it is not bringing up my location. When I click the blue dot it says "You current location is temporarily unavailable".

In conclusion, it seems that something has changed between "Sense 2.5 6.5.3 28014 v1.6" and "Sense 2.5 6.5.3 28014 v1.6" which breaks this tower-ID functionality of Google Maps.

ONE MORE FINAL EDIT:

For good measure, I also just tested version 3.2.1 (#17) on the latest ROM and it too does not do the tower-ID as it did in the older ROM.

At this point I'm passing the ball to someone else to figure out what was changed in between these ROMs, because that's an area that I'm a noob in. Cheers folks
nice troubleshooting.....saved me some time......more than likely it has something to do w/ sense 2012 or the aGPS packages from 1922 to 2011

BTW, I tried Max Manila 3.0 with the latest OMJ and it was so screwed up I had to uninstall it. Such a shame. All I really want is a more visible icon on Today screen that says how many Emails I have.
Also, I see on the Page 1 jpg of the quick link screen a 4 x 3 matrix, making 12 buttons. Why do I only have 6 (3 x 2) ?
those screens shots were from the Sense 1921 ROM which had the 12 quicklinks mod....we're still waiting for a 2012 version

Anyway, I've been on Energy for the past several months, but since he doesn't actually have a Diamond to test with, there's been a number of lingering bugs. I've got a few questions about this one before I try to flash (partly to decide which version I even want to flash..)

Right now I'm on 28014 with Sense 2.1 (EnergyROM), and I'd say that it's reasonably stable, but the few bugs I've got are starting to irritate me more and more. So question 1... are these bugs present in OMJ's ROM?

* The volume rocker works even if the device is locked
* In call volume always defaults to middle, does not remember setting
* The HTC SMS app won't show all of my messages (but the All Messages button that launches the Windows SMS app does)
* The lock screen thinks I still have an appointment (on the next day) after an appointment has passed
* Occasionally unlocking my phone will drop me to the dialer and dial * (I have no idea why, and it's inconsistent)

Next question... has Sense 2.5 gotten any better on the Diamond? The last time I tried it, there were noticeable problems that looked to mostly stem from trying to port it to VGA. For example, it was impossible to set the Twitter update settings to the lowest value because the menu would be off the bottom of the screen, or quick launch icons on the home screen would be cut off (doesn't look to be an issue from the screenshots on page 1).

Lastly, what's the difference between Sense 2.5 and 2.5 2012? I assume 2012 is a newer build, but what's changed? Is it worth it?
sorry to be brief....

yes
no
yes, that is due to the people message classic mod

I'll be damned too, turned on wifi without connecting to a network and google maps gets my location to within 90m without GPS! This is even more precise than than the old ROM was locating (1000m) without GPS. Weird stuff.

Thanks for discovering this! Now what does this mean?

I just did a little experiment, I disabled the EVDO connection and the phone's radio by turning on flight mode, and then only enabled WiFi but didn't connect, and google still gets my location to within 90m.

So how the heck is Google Maps getting my location with only the WiFi radio turned on but not connected to any network? Wtf?

EDIT: Ok, I think I was a little too excited there, lol. I cleared Google's cache by reseting it from the menu and ran the same procedure, this time it could not locate me, so I think it was pulling my location from the cache. In other words it still requires an ACTIVE network connection to locate you without GPS.

EDIT 2:

If you disable WiFi with Google Maps open, my location will cease to function (it will still show your location, but will not update). Re-Enabling Wifi will restore my location's updates.

Here's some info about "my location" from Google:

Quote:
The My Location service takes information broadcast from mobile towers near you to approximate your current location on the map-it's not GPS, but it comes pretty close. We are always working to improve our coverage, but we're still in beta and there may be some areas where our coverage is incomplete; if you get an error message when trying to access your location, don't worry---it should work in other nearby locations.

If you do have a GPS-enabled device, My Location can actually complement it. My Location kicks in faster than GPS in most cases, so you can access your location even faster on the map. It also works reliably indoors (unlike GPS) and doesn't drain your phone battery at the rate that GPS does.

A chef that replies in his own Diamond thread? What crazy world have I entered?!

The volume while locked thing is annoying, but I've dealt with it long enough that I'm used to it by now. The in call volume reset is by far the most annoying thing, so glad to see that's working.

Based on all I've read here, it looks like 28014 / Sense 2.1 is the best one for me until some more things are ported over/fixed in Sense 2.5 2012 (most importantly QuickLinks mod). I'll give it a go either tonight or sometime tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies!

lol, yeah I'm very active in my thread....I have several roms to play w/ but I'll be honest, the 2.1 roms have been neglected. the demand is more for 2.5. if you want to try a 2.5 rom that has all the mods, I would recommend OMJ_Diamond_SENSE_2.5_28014_v1.6.7z. Sense 2012 is nice but it's not much different, but doesnt have the mods.

OMJ:
I have a request/suggestion for a useful app

Sound an alarm when you walk away with your diamond and the stylus is not in the holder, or maybe even an electrical shock to get your attention

I was setting some stuff up on my diamond when someone came to the door, I set my stuff down, went to the door, grabbed my diamond and left with my friend, noticed I left the stylus at home, when I got back, no where to be found

An alarm or an electrical shock would be a great improvement, and I guarantee that when I get a chance to order a new one (this was my 3rd backup and hadn't ordered additional backups), that when they arrive, I will find it

was wondering, I started a new job that's about a 45 minute drive, I like watching CNN in the morning, I noticed that PMD has a rom (using your kitchen) and he has mobile tv on the tabs, I haven't noticed this on any other rom and doesn't look like there is any download for an add on to another rom, since he is using your kitchen/rom, anyway you can sweet talk him into giving you the info so you could add this feature to your rom?

or do you know of a comparable solution to be able to do this? I guess since I'm driving I could see if I could just find an audio stream since I am just listening to it

I tried his rom just to see what the tv looked like, while that's a nice feature, your rom still kicks some... well, you know what!!
