How to get Airave2 now with 3g

I don't know who has heard but on 8/20, the airave access point was officially announced by Sprint. This new unit is now made by airvana and finally supports voice and data.

So of course I checked the site and nothing. Then I called sprint asking on how to get on. And of course no one knew what I was talking about. After 3 phone calls talking to 7 ppl, finally found someone that didn't think I was crazy. They kindly transferred me to account services (for the third time) and they said they will do a swap.
The new unit actually isn't available until 2011 and will only be offered to current users that inquire about it and to people that threaten to terminate. So if you don't have one, threaten to cancel I suppose. And the new unit has no fees at all attached to it like the original piece. Where there is a will there is a way and I will be enjoying mine when I get it on Friday.
Good luck!

Tis is true about the new Airvana...it's around but not yet out. Anyone (like me) that already has a Airave is eligible to get the new one. Your account currently reflects a Upgrade for that line...so when it comes out they will offer the new one to you. I also heard you have to send back the old one...but I am going to look into that before I send it back.

aman1127 09-01-2010 04:22 AM

Yup, they pay for shipping. I'll post pics Friday when I get it. I already have a tracking number.

***BTW listed as airave 2.0 on my confirmation

there have been several people on other forums (and this one also) who have received the new version without having the original. just call into retentions and explain to them your situation. they will also sneak in a 18 dollar activation fee so make sure you inquire about any fees before you end the call.

Just called up and they will be sending me a new Airave2 and a return kit for the old. No hassle at all. :headbang:

tru in deed had mine for about a week now....working great for me....no fees at all...great....and yes my first call went to some1 who had no idea....i called back and dude hooked me up no problems i kept asking "is this the new one that supports 3g"

yankees45us 09-01-2010 01:18 PM

I've called 4 times and still can't get them to send me one, even though I have the samsung airave. I will wait. I'm tired of messing with idiots who have no idea what they are talking about. I'm happy with using my wifi when I'm at home.

The new one has no fees, it'd meant to be free. It was in sprint's PR release

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

received my airave access point last week. hooked it up according to directions and my network slowed to a crawl. looks like the AP cant pass lots of data quickly and efficiently. after making the AP part of the network instead of the main network switching decvice it fixed the network slowdown. signal strength of unit is adjustable (click update airave on sprint account page) and 3g works well (it better it is basically glorified wifi).

the only issue i have left is poor hand offs from airave to celltower. seems my evo wont let go when connected to airave, so the call drops as i pull away from my house.

best advice on getting one of these is to call customer care (aka retentions) and ask nicely if you can get the airave access point as a replacement for your existing airave. it worked for me and should for you. just remember to be polite and dont act like a douche bag

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

did you put the Airvana in FRONT of the router? if so thats why is slowed..

the airvana has Sprints future VOIP service inside and it must control QoS so that it gets sufficient bandwidth to handle VOIP calls.

if your router has QoS built in then you can set up your router to allow the airvana to have primary access.

in the meantime, you can put the airvana behind the router on an unused port and be just fine. thats what i did and thats how i had the first gen airave...

yep still wont hand off the call and that is the only negative if your not on a call when you leave then no biggie...

aman1127 09-01-2010 03:42 PM

Does anyone know if the wires and gps unit are the same? Can I just keep the old wires and send back the new wires with the old box to keep the hookup simple? I hate having to go under the desk to fish wires.

Aman1127, you may not even need the GPS antenna. Try and see if you get lock without it.... Mine's fine without the antenna.

It is like a mini cell tower in your house that hooks up to your home internet for those that have bad reception in their home. Will give you perfect signal!

The gps is necessary because of fcc regulations. They need to locate you if there is an emergency. Gps is necessary to locate towers and broadband boosts signal

I have called in a couple of times complaining about service inside my home and asked about the airave. Never have any luck getting one without coughing up the $100 up front and them $5 a month which I told them I shouldnt have to pay extra to use my phone in my house....Verizon didnt make me for the 8 years I was with them..Never works though, they just say "sorry sir".

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

I went ahead and gave it a shot. Normally I have bad luck with getting any kinds of deals. Today was my lucky day. Spoke to a nice guy from Florida named Casey (or KC) and he told me he'd send me one out for free! I asked him, "So I'm not getting charged for this?" and he said "No sir, no charge." Call and ask for KC from Florida and talk about the weather and your summer vacation.

No charge as in no monthly fee as well??

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

zero ship cost
zero monthly fee

yes if you have good sprint reception then there is no need for this unit.

yes you can use the GPS antenna and cat 5 cable. i would swap out the AC adapter.

i disable QOS on both the router and the Airave. i just have too much data pumping through my network to have the Airave up front slowing things down. i have never been a fan of QOS on consumer devices (geared mostly toward VOIP and gaming). given how fast cable internet (and FIOS of which i cannot get... damn AT&T) is in 2010 having QOS enabled just makes for unacceptable bottlenecks.

You don't need the extra long antenna. That's if the built in antenna cannot get signal. You misread me.

the gps is to prevent you from bringing the airave out of the united states and using it anywhere on earth that has a broadband internet connection.

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

anyone that has called in and done this, if you could answer a question for me. I have the original airave and pay the $5 fee for the airave and then $10 for unlimited minutes (not using your plan minutes) while I am connected and using the airave. I know people are saying this new one doesn't have the $5 fee but is the option to have that $10 unlimited airave minutes still available?

marctronixx 09-01-2010 10:27 PM

Re: How to get Airave2 now with 3g

to the poster who has no internet,

if you have clearwire in your area you can get a clearwire enabled router and go that route...

rwoodr,

you really didnt have to pay the fees for the first model. you could have those waived also...

with the new airvana, there are no fees associated with it... none. its unlimited period...

i never paid for the original device, nor have i had to pay the $5 monthly fee. i didnt opt for unlimited minutes so i cannot speak on the $10 fee. when the order was placed for the new airave, i was informed that there would be a return kit sent seperately and that i should send back the old unit. that made me happy.

after reading some of the forums, i see that it doesnt always go as smooth as in my case. sprint sometimes baffles the mind with the inconsistencies from plan to plan and person to person. you would think by now someone in corporate would have figured out how to make things even across the board. i do know this... acting like a douche will get you nothing, so choose your words carefully!!!

I just called and told them I was reading I was able to get a free upgrade and they said yes, no problem at all. However I did ask and the girl told me my monthly fees would still continue that only the equipment is free and not the monthly fee.

What's up with that?

I had never even thought to ask about them waiving the fees till I started reading this thread... so sad. I have 0 reception in my area and it was the greatest thing ever when I first got the airave. that was over a year ago now.. *sigh* ah well, thanks for the info. time to call sprint!
