Can I use my upgrade on A Blackberry w/o changing my plan(not activate it)??

I am out of contract and eligible for an upgrade discount with Sprint. However, the Touch Pro2 from Sprint is a rediculous $350 With renewal, when U.S. Cellular's is $99 and Att & Verizon's are $199. My friend has a Pro2 but needs a Blackberry for his new job. He's not eligible for an upgrade discount and said he would trade it to me. Could I use my upgrade on a $49 Blackberry 8330 and not Activate it, then trade it to him for the Pro2. Will they make me change to a Blackberry plan for getting the phone or only if I activate it?? I do not want to change my plan whatsoever,( $39.99/450 min with $15 unlimited data @ 22% employee discount= $43/month.)Thanks for any insight!

I think so. Besides you can't use a different carrier's phone. BUT here is an idea. Since your plan will probably let you get a TP2, he pays you for the TP2 and you buy a Blackberry and voila.

Are you saying I can't use my upgrade to get a Blackberry and not activate it? Or They won't let me buy the Blackberry without switching to a BB plan, even if I don't activate it.

His Touch Pro2 "is" with sprint. All I would do is trade him the BB for his Touch Pro2 and activate it on my plan instead of the Blackberry.

I thought the problems with incompatable plans was when you went to activate the phone?

yes you can. it just means that when you go to activate your friend's tp2 on your account you are locked for another 2 years even though you didn't activate the bb on your line.

for this to work...your friend has to activate your bb on his line first thus freeing up his tp2 so that you can activate it on your line.

it doesn't work in reverse because his tp2 is linked to his account so that's why you have to do the bb activation first not second.

I used my upgrade to get an htc hero and didn't even activated since they wouldn't budge about activating it on my sero account lol...I ended up selling it or in your case you are simply switching/trading bb/tp2.

he can also sell his tp2 on ebay, buy/activate a tp1 and get a bb tour by sprint moving him out of his tp1 and into the bb tour.

OK, Thanks that clears it up a bit.
Now I have another problem. I called Sprint this morning and they told me I would have to add the $30/month Pro plan data add on to use the Touch Pro 2. She said it is now required on all PDA's. I now have a Diamond on the $39 450/min plan with $15 unlimited Power Vision Data.

Will it not let me activate it online, or will they later try and force me to pay $15 more/month for data?? They won't let you use it without a $30/month data plan, but From what I read you can use a Touch Pro2 on a $30/Total SERO plan???? If so I may be finding me a SERO plan someone wants to get rid of!

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you would need to add the $30 plan, rep might have been trying sell you extra services.

do you have an extra old sprint phone laying around??

you can test what the rep said by having your friend temporary activate an old sprint phone.
his tp2 is now free to be activate on a different account/line. you then activate the tp2 online through sprint.com and if the Sprint system lets you activated it your good to go.
you can even check for yourself the 'plan details' are still the same once the tp2's picture shows up on your sprint.com account, your data $15 add on should be there.

im trying to do kind of the same thing. i have 4 phones coming. 3 of them i do not want and would like to sale.( 2 heros and a moment) these are for new accounts. i already have phones that im going to activate on the new account. can i just sale these phone without doing anything or do i have to activate them first then activate old phones i already have?
