ADB is kinda advanced... it's a little bit of a PITA to setup for a Windows box. Not surprisingly, it's much easier (IMHO) to setup on a Linux box.

Here's a guide to ADB, it's Android-specific but most should apply.

Ah, yeah, I keep forgetting I had already set up the ADB drivers which is required before you can use Droid Explorer.

It's actually not that bad to set up though. Just grab the USB drivers from here and extract somewhere: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11790134/usb_driver.zip

Connect your device to the computer, right click on My Computer and click Manage, then go to Device Manager. You will see several unknown devices. Right click on the XDA one, and click Update Driver. Now select Browse my computer for the driver, click Let me pick..., click Have Disk, and point it to android_winusb.inf that you extracted from the zip. Select Android ADB Interface and say yes to any warnings. :)

You make it sound so easy :p Maybe it was user error, but I had a heckuva time with the drivers. Plus, it for some reason decided to stop working once and I had go thru and blast out the existing drivers & replace. I say Linux is easier because I edited one file, restarted udev and it's just always worked after that ;)

Thanks for the post tho. You should have teradog add this to his beastly first post guide thingy.

Hey guys. I've been trying for weeks to get android to boot up. It gets stuck on various stages of the boot sequence no matter what I do. I've tried flashing different ROMS to see if it was a compatiblity issue with that and I've cleared off the memory card and started from scratch. Nothing is working. When it first came out I got it to boot up but eventually deleted it because it didn't work with data and there was no sound back then. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Wipe the card clean, full format using the HP tool. Or gparted. Basically anything but the built-in Windows utility.

After that, download a new build. Extract the rar to your SD, and boot. Assuming it works, you should be able to update & continue.

Be sure to setup the startup.txt for your phone (force cdma, phys kbd...)

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

Startup.txt setup is pretty easy. If you use the startup utility, it'll set it up for you, but it can also cause issues. Basically if you're using CDMA you need to set the force_cdma value to 1, if GSM 0. You also need to match keymappings - so if you have a rhod400, your physkeyboardd statement needs to =rhod400...

Usually easiest to put it at the root of the SD - if you put it in a folder, name the folder 'andboot'. Otherwise you'll have to adjust the rel_path value in the startup as well.

It seems that this is a common error in haret and may relate to why it won't boot: "there are differences in the boot sector and its backup"

Ok, I know you're new but don't just keep making new posts... edit your last post.

With that out of the way, here's my startup...

Code:

set ramsize 0x10000000
set ramaddr 0x10000000
set mtype 2292
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "lcd.density=240 msmvkeyb_toggle=off force_cdma=1 gsensor_axis=2,1,3 pm.sleep_mode=2 hw3d.force=1 physkeyboard=rhod400 rel_path=andboot"
boot

Took out my custom crap, that should be all you need to boot.

Actually, that isn't a patch. It's a whole kernel, modules, and rootfs that have the new button mappings reverted. If you use that, you will always have to update manually.

Instead, you should use Spare Parts from the app drawer to assign home to the end key unless you really need the recently launched app menu from holding the top power button.

You still can't boot...? Kernel panic doesn't sound good, like it wasn't able to mount your SD or something... have you done anything to the build or did you just download it, extract it to your SD and run haret...?

I downloaded the latest Nov. 1 version and it keeps getting stuck. I just changed the keyboard to rhod400 and the force cdma to 1. I don't know what's going on. I just downloaded the sept 28th version and there is no startup.txt in it. I created a startup.txt file based on yours and added overclocking. We'll see how it goes. I was just thinking I've been forgetting to take out the sim card. I don't know if that is affecting anything. I'm tried to boot up with the sept 28th version with the abovementioned startup.txt. It goes to the XDANDROID boot up screen and keeps showing the same animation over and over and then goes to a black screen.

I started fresh. It always seems to say there are differences between the boot sector and the backup then it says not automatically fixing this.

Sounds like a good ole bootloop. Delete your data.img (created where haret.exe is) and reboot.

Rule of thumb, wait 10 minutes before doing anything. First boot can take a while...

Awesome. And can I start editing the startup.txt now to add over clocking and how do I get rid of the backlight and orange light from constantly being on?

Backlight should not be constantly on.

If you don't use the startup app, you can edit the startup.txt manually (although I think sov added a checkbox to allow manual editing of the startup...) Normally it would just blast out the startup & create a new one every time.

Orange & green indicate wake & sleep... Please read the FAQ.

Sorry, I just found the new Simple Guide and it answered all my questions. One last thing...is there any way to check whether android is running overclocked? And it seems like it keeps freezing, especially in kik and gmail and running kind of slow. Is there anything I should check on?

Check the startup file. acpu_clock= is your clock speed.

if you're having issues just booting, I would forego worrying about OC... get it working first then focus on clocking would be my suggestion.8-)

I got it booted now but it seems to be running kind of slow and programs keep freezing up and also it randomly reboots and starts up android again once in a while. I want to try to tweak it to make it better.

Is there a cab for just the startup utility? I hard reset my phone and just want to keep my current Android setup. I know I can just launch Haret directly but I'd like to have the utility for updating purposes.

Don't overclock, it usually makes things more unstable. With that said, Android isn't so stable on our devices yet. Stick to WinMo if it's an issue.

Hi,
I setup my phone to automatically sync with the network's time. But for some reason, my phone clock does not sync with cell network's time. It's running about 1 minute slower per hour (~10min per 8hr day). If I reboot into WM and relaunch Android, the time is correct again.
Please help.

Are you using ClockSync? I don't know what the clock sync issue has it's foundation in, but to me it's not a big deal. Not like I'll wake up tomorrow thinking it's friday or anything.

Try reading the Simple Guide that someone just stickied, everything is in there. With that said, just uncheck the auto time sync and set it to your time zone and the problem will be solved.

My xdandroid 11/01 REF installs have also been running slow.. After about a hour or so of use.. it will begin to crawl and become laggy. I have tried reinstalling and formatted my sd card. I'm gonna go back to Sept's BLAZN rls to see if I have the problem.

I have noticed that I can fairly consistently cause Android to crash when using the Messaging app. I'll receive a text or go to send a text, and when I click around, I can usually tell when it is about to crash. Say I click a text message to read it, if it hangs for a couple of seconds, I know my screen is about to go black and boot back into Windows.

This didn't use to be an issue, it has been in more recent builds. I keep updating to the latest kernels hoping that it'll get fixed, but no dice yet.

Also, deep sleep is annoying. :(
