Good Handheld Type GPS App??

I'm looking for a GPS app that will turn my phone into a Garmin Handheld type device. In particular, I want to use it when I ride my motorcycle to easily trace my route taken and be able to upload that information to Google Maps. Something that allows the ability to work like a typical auto-nav GPS device like a Garmin or Tom-Tom would be great too, but those types of devices don't allow route logging from what I can tell.

Any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks!

Re: Good Handheld Type GPS App??

Good resource. Thanks. I'm still wondering if anyone has any personal experience with any good piece of software that might be similar to a handheld GPS unit?

You could try Sportypal. It is not quite what you describe, but it will track your route and show it on Google Maps. It is free, so the only cost to try it is your time.

The Telenav software is nice but you have to pay for a subscription.
The TomTom software for PPC has to be bought.
I use Google Maps and bing cause they work pretty good and they are free.
They are not very finger friendly though so stylus is probably a must for these.

Re: Good Handheld Type GPS App??

You could try Bike Dashboard

What is BikeDashboard ?

BikeDashboard is a Windows Mobile (5 and above) application for all push bike enthusiasts (mountain bike and/or road bike) who want to:
  • keep a track of their achievements:
    • where they have been,
    • how long ,
    • how fast,
    • how high,
  • have a navigation help using GPX file to discover new tracks (you can download some from various web sites including excellent ones as www.bikely.com or www.bikeradar.com or else www.nobmob.com ),
  • export their data to Google Maps / Google Earth or other mapping softwares,
  • monitor in real time and afterwards the evolution of their performances,
  • have a moving map software that can work with any raster map (calibration software provided to make your own map with any picture),
  • have instant data (current/average/max speed), current/climb/descent altitude.
This application comes with its Windows Desktop companion to analyze and store your performances, calibrate your raster maps and manage your files library.
What do I need to run it?

To run BikeDashboard PDA, you need:
  • A Windows Mobile 5 (or >) Professional device. Professional means that you need a touch screen device. A version for Smartphone will be designed later on.
  • A GPS receiver,
  • MS .Net Compact Framework 3.5 installed on your device.
For the Desktop software, you need a MS Windows OS (2000 / XP / Vista supported), with .Net Framework installed.

Awesome? So how much does that cost?

Well... nothing!
This software is a freeware.
That means that if you like it... you don't have to pay for it.
And if you don't like it... I don't have to pay you back!

Re: Good Handheld Type GPS App??

Thanks guys for all the responses. I downloaded Bike Dashboard along with some other freeware apps. I'm sure I'll find one of them will do what I want. Again, my interest is saving and entering routes for riding.
