[7/14/09] - Nitrogen v1.1 (definitely my new mp3 player)

1 Attachment(s)
Version 1.1 is here!!!! Not only is this my favorite mp3 player hands down, but it's also in my top 3 favorite wm apps. I know that there are a lot of mp3 players out there, but I don't think there are any as good as this one. This thing is awesome: truly finger friendly with very large buttons, built in equalizer, sleep mode to turn off screen, very lightweight, very fast, even plays OGG files, and the list goes on. Many more features were added to version 1.0.0, and the full change log for this newest version (v1.1) is listed below. (Note: The earlier version (v0.3.2) was moved down to post #8 to keep this thread more concise.)

Change Log - v1.1
  • Fixed many memory leaks and minor bugs;
  • Added multilanguage support;
  • Added option to resume playing when program starts;
  • Added GSPlayer plugin support (now accepting WMA/WAV/AAC/MP4/M4U) files;
  • Improved the option "Change playing song through previous/next buttons";
  • Nitrogen now pauses when phone receives call;
  • Song info is available on registry;
  • Fixed the MP3 ringtone issue;
  • Now handling large album art files;
  • Media browser and Equalizer now show "Ok" button instead of "X", allowing users to close them without closing the whole app;
Along with a couple notes by me, the following was taken from the new xda thread, and the project's homepage.

Microfi Nitrogen 1.1 (Jul 13, 2009)
(Nitrogen is licensed under GNU General Public License)

Click on the image below to start downloading!

[More languages/plugins/skins - See Here]
[Large files bug - click here to download fix]

What's new:
Now playing MP3/OGG/WMA/WAV/AAC/MP4/M4U files (with included GSPlayer plugins);
Multilanguage support (English/Portuguese-BR built-in, but more languages available on Post #2);
Many memory leaks and bugs were fixed;
Now handling large album art files;
Now remembers last playing position;
(and much more!)

Tip: many features are now accessible through long-tap (tapping and holding for a while): fast-forward and rewind, advanced playlist actions and so on!

Quoted from the new xda thread:
Quote:

Microfi Nitrogen is a native Windows Mobile application (unmanaged code) that allows you to play MP3/OGG songs stored on your Pocket PC device.
It features a file browser, full skin support, smart shuffle and repeat modes, a 10-band equalizer with preset support (8 included presets), built-in sleep mode, a blank screen command to prevent energy waste while playing music and many more new features. Nitrogen uses the MAD/OVD decoders, which are opensource. As the official releases of MAD for Pocket PC seem to be discontinued, Nitrogen uses the libraries from an opensource player (GSPlayer).
Nitrogen was build due to the lack of finger-friendly players for Pocket PC (you have to use stylus even for simple tasks). It features large buttons and you can browse among your playlist by drawing circles on the screen (using skins which support wheel component). In future releases the program will be expected to have other extensions support and more features, but such things are still being tested to ensure stability and efficiency.
Key features
:: Full MP3/OGG/AAC/MP4/M4A/3GP/WAV/WMA playback;
:: Customizable interface with skin support;
:: 10-band equalizer with 8 presets (MP3 only);
:: Large and easy-to-use buttons;
:: Media browser with playlist editor;
:: Large menus to perform tasks with the fingers;
:: Kinetic scrolling;
:: Smart shuffle and repeat modes;
:: Adjustable sleep timer;
:: Amazingly fast to load and to play;
:: Blank screen command to save energy;
:: Native C++ code: no need for .NET framework;
:: Extremely lightweight;
:: File association support;
:: Album art support;
:: Opensource;
:: Multilanguage support;

From the dev:
Quote:

The reason I took so long to post a new version is that I was scarcely having any free time to work on Nitrogen. Also 95% of the code was rewritten (those who download the source will notice that now I'm using C++ classes, making the code neat and readable), many new features were added and many bugs were fixed, so I hope it was worth waiting!
Note: the skins for the previous version(.0.3.2) still work on this newer version. The skin thread can be found here. The (iphone-like) scroll wheel feature that was present in earlier releases is still supported, but is not utilized in the default skin. Although there a quite a few more skins now that take advantage of this feature, I still use ManilaLike (pictured below).

Doesn't like my mp3 collection, hangs, freezes, and closes randomly.

Re: Nitrogen Player v0.3.2 (definitely my new mp3 player)

I used a past version of this application, but two things that have me sticking to the port of the Diamond Audio Manager for now:

-No AVRCP
-I noticed the Updates list include "File browser that scans directories to make playlists;". Does that mean the new player can read all the files in a directory and not just those present in the root? I was disgruntled to have to navigate through my music folder, into the artist and then album folder just to play a song i wanted to hear.

Yes it can. You can choose whether to add the subfolders or not.

~To install skins:
1. Download the zip file
2. Unzip it
3. Copy the SK2 file to the "skins folder" ( \Program Files\Nitrogen\skins )
4. Then use the Skin selector inside of the actual app, found under the Options menu (right soft key)

Even more skins can be had at the skins page.

Are those pics the default skin? I'm using the older version and I really like the scroll "wheel" as a method to move through songs. Has that feature been dropped?

There is even a Skin Toolbox to design your own skins if you feel up to it. Here is the tutorial so far, not quite finished according to the dev.

(The Skin Toolbox was found in the first post of the skins page.)

Nice application. Fast-loading and finger-friendly. Sounds good and works very well on stock TP. Only negative is the equalizer which causes crackles and speaker pops. Could possibly be my mp3s though, many of which were pre-stereo recordings. (My golden oldies are O.L.D. lol)
Yeah Darren, it's strangely the same layout as S2P. No interface learning-curve at all.

Yes that is the default skin, which does not take advantage of the scroll wheel. However, here are 2 skins that do:

Takeiteasy VGA
3.1 default

Edited my above post. Yes it still has scroll wheel support, not sure why it's not included in the default skin.

You can scroll through your playlist (in an ipod-like manner) using the scroll wheel included in those skins. Those were the only 2 skins that I tested, but the scroll wheel feature has not been dropped.

Ok, let me see if I can help.

I have each of my albums stored in a folder that only holds that album. So when I use the media browser to navigate to an album, I just load all the songs to my playlist.

Or, it doesn't really matter if you don't have your folders set up that way. You can just go to your music folder and load all your songs into your playlist. This would make a long list will all of your songs, sorta like navigating to "All Songs" in the iPod. Then you can use the scroll wheel (available in the skins in my op) to find songs in your library.

Or you can clear your playlist (doesn't delete the songs) then go through your folders selecting specific songs to add to your playlist.

It would be nice if it this app sorted songs by author or album (I'm sure that'll be coming in future releases) but honestly its not that bad, especially if you have your albums arranged in folders. Just add each fold (or you can just go to you music folder and all sub folders in one fell swoop) to your playlist (so that the album's songs are grouped together) then use the scroll wheel, or even the default skin, so jump through songs. Really not that hard to get use to. As fast as this app is, and as finger friendly as it is, I think it's worth it.

Re: Nitrogen Player v0.3.2 (definitely my new mp3 player)

I've been messing around with this app for a couple weeks now, and I must say that this is my favorite mp3 player. Yeah, the bulk song playlist might take a bit of getting use to, but like goodgets said, it's just like navigating through all songs on the iPod. However, these are grouped by albums, which makes it even better. I think this is the most attractive and easiest to use mp3 player out there. Truly the most finger friendly. I love the scroll wheel feature, and don't know why it's not used in the default skin (it use to be in previous versions btw). Anyways, it can still be enabled using a different skin.

Great app and thanks.

small update, but an update (I guess) nonetheless

MAR 24 - Now you can download common equalizer presets and use them on Nitrogen (many thanks to sabesh). To install them, download the preset.eql file and copy it to Nitrogen's folder (under \Program Files\Nitrogen).

You just tap the X button in the top right of the screen. This will take you back to the player from the browser of playlist.

If you are in the options menu, to get back to the player, just tap the left softkey "Exit" which only exits the menu not the actual player.

omg, waaaayyyy better. This not only my favorite mp3 player, but one of my favorite apps as well. So finger friendly and so light on the ram as well, makes me wonder why wmp is such a memory hog.

Glad you like it. Don't know if you've tried any of the skins, but a few of them (linked near the bottom of the first post) re-enable the scroll wheel feature. Although it's not used on the default skin (which it used to be), it is still supported. Enjoy.

I hate to come across "dumb" but when I hit the X in the top right hand corner, it closes the whole program. I can exit options okay, just can't seem to get back to the player once I'm in the playlist or media browser without going back to the Today screen and re-selecting Nitrogen.

I was able to reproduce and solve this problem.

I think you might have you "X" button set to End Programs by tapping "X"
try changing it to tapping and holding "X"

this is under: Start> Settings> System> Task Manager> Button
(although this may be different depending on your rom)

Yes, my shuffle is working. I tested this using a couple different skins (default and manilalike) to see if it was skin related. I also tried just pushing the toggle shuffle on the screen as well as selecting shuffle under the options menu, and both ways work correctly.

Also, my songs also play one after the other (in shuffle and non-shuffle modes). I assume you've added all the songs, or at least more than that one, to your playlist?

Maybe trying uninstalling, soft reset, then re-install? I hope you get this working, I think you'll really like this player once you do.

Don't know what more you could really want from it though? The only thing it doesn't have is AVRCP support, which will be added in the next release. I'm not sure when that will be, but I'll be sure to update when it does (I check this everyday).

The only annoying thing is when you want to pick a new song you have to go back to storage - My Doc. - My music then the album

I may just be a little lazy but i hate taking my stylist every time needs to be more finger friendly

You definetly do not have to do that. You can just load up all your songs in the playlist, all songs in a folder will stay grouped together. Then you can just use the playlist browser to flick through the songs. Or an even easier way, use one of the skins that uses the scroll wheel, which will allow you roll through songs right on the media player screen and tap play when you find the one you want. Exactly like an ipod.

Stylist? No way. One of the reasons this was made was that so you would never have to use your stylist. Not only is this is hands down the most finger friendly mp3 player I've ever used, but also one of the most finger friendly apps. I just don't think you wanna give it a chance.

Don't say that you have really big fingers or something because this is finger friendly to even the biggest of hands. I was at Shaq's barbecue last weekend and I showed him this app. He loved it, and even he couldn't get over how finger friendly it was.

Hope that helped.

I'm embarrased to say I just am not 'getting' it..

I run Nitrogen.

I hit the playlist icon in the upper right.

I navigate to /Storage Card/My Documents/My Music/

There is only one folder there in the form of Artist/Album/*.MP3s

Now what? If I navigate into artist/album, I dont see any MP3s at all..

If I stay in the My Music folder and check 'add subfolders to playlist', the playlist window comes up but nothing is in it..

??

you gota load all your songs to the playlist, the more i use this player the more i like it. the screen off icon is the best. the skin the op uses is the best skin imo. you can switch songs as far ahead as you want while other song is playing, then press play to start other song. use g trigger to start the app. also a plus.

Re: Nitrogen Player v0.3.2 (definitely my new mp3 player)

you gota load all your songs to the playlist

How do I do that?

If I navigate using the Media Browser to /Storage Card/My Documents/My Music/ , I can hit Folder Options, Select All, Add Subfolders to playlist, (anything), and then hit playlist in the lower right and the playlist is empty..

I can use a regular file browser to go to the directory, click on one of the MP3s, and it plays fine in Media Player..
