YouTube Streaming Mobile: A "How To" WM5/M6/SP

YouTube Mobile--How to for Treo, 6700, etc.

It's to my understanding newer WM6 devices can do m.youtube.com streaming natively.

On the Treo 700 and some other devices, this is not the case due to lack of RTSP codec support (not even TCMP or CORE will save you!).

Thanks to XDA, HowardForums and duken2389 at TC, this is how it is done. :thumbleft:

Download this file  LINK

Inside are 3 more files.

- Step #1.zip: unzip to your device and copy to \Windows
- Step#2- Streaming_210.cab: Install to Main mem on device

Soft-reset

- Step #3-HTC_Streaming_Media.cab: Install to Main mem

Now, when you go to m.youtube.com and click the "view now" link, it should launch this program and stream the content.

It's "OK" quality, no iPhone
------------------------------------------------------------------------
WM6/Mogul Users Directions (thanks Stroths!)

1. Install cab from Step 3.
2. Soft Reset as instructed by the software
3. Enjoy

TIP: Stop the player and exit out of it before changing the screen orientation on the 6800. Otherwise, it makes it hang for about 5 seconds.

Works on 6800/Mogul

I tried m.youtube.com and it would not play anything on my 6800. I followed your instructions and now it works just as you described. Thanks for the instructions Mal.

Yeah, they have about 10,000+ videos right now but they are adding more and more everyday evidently.

I imagine in a couple of months it'll be most of their catalogue.

For everyone else, glad it's working! :thumbleft:

colonel 06-30-2007 07:05 PM

Ok, I tried this out and it seems to work fine. However, I think the install can be simplified and an OEM can be created. What is strange is that all the files in Step#1 should be getting overwritten by the cabs.

colonel 06-30-2007 07:45 PM

BTW, to test I did a hard reset and just installed cab#3 and it works fine. Can anyone else confirm this?

I originally just installed cab #3 that I saw posted in the Apache forum before this post was made. I haven't tried it the way Malatesta described but for me it appears to work and looks the same (clicking on a video on m.youtube.com launches the HTC Streaming App which streams the video). I guess I'll give the other method a shot just to confirm it's the same thing.

On a side note, there still doesn't appear to be a way to stream videos from the main youtube site, is there? I read a recent post that installing the Flash 7 player on the 6800 allows it to work, but I can't get it to work on my 6700. I am able to use the codecs and YouTubeDownload.exe to download and play videos in TCPMP so that's better than nothing, but streaming would be nice.

colonel 06-30-2007 09:25 PM

BTW, I found vixy.net. It lets you convert a youtube video to various formats and download them. This is great for favorite videos you want to have off hand. I found that Mp4 format works great with WMP. If someone wants to post a full thread on this, feel free.

It's a mixed bag.

It appears that devices < AKU 3.x/WM6 need some of those extra files. That is, just doing Steps 2 & 3 do not allow the program to work for me on the 700wx.

So some finesse needs to be done to make sure that certain devices get the necessary files while newer AKU devices just get the minimum.

It should be able to simplified though to a single .cab, I imagine.

lghitis 06-30-2007 11:55 PM

Mal, thanks for your posting. In my mogul should I be able to watch youtube without installing any software? I get an error everytime I try.

I don't think so, even though it's Wm6. I think only some newer HTC devices do it 'out of the box', so I'd just go ahead and install all 3 files--nothing really to loose unless anyone with a Mogul could assist?

monkey 07-01-2007 02:19 AM

Works flawlessly on the Q. I installed step #2 on my storage card by accident, but it still works great! Thanks Mal!!

I did a hard reset and just did step 3 on my 6800 and it works fine. As noted in an earlier post, it also works following steps 1-3 on a 6800. However, I prefer the one-step method. I was concerned with the 3 step method that I was installing files that the 6800 did not need.

Install Instructions for the Sprint 6800/Mogul.

1. Install cab from step 3 in first post.
2. Soft Reset as instructed by the software
3. Enjoy

TIP: Stop the player and exit out of it before changing the screen orientation on the 6800. Otherwise, it makes it hang for about 5 seconds.

lghitis 07-01-2007 05:20 PM

Now is working well. Thanks.

Hanniballs 07-02-2007 10:59 PM

I have had this installed on my wx for a few days now and just installed it on my 6800. My only question/comment is in regards to the orientation switch. Why would it rotate to landscape (left handed) vs (right handed) the way the device naturally opens.

freeflow504 07-04-2007 07:28 PM

does this only work for youtube streaming videos.

smo1a 07-04-2007 09:41 PM

Thanks so much. :P

allblackmax 07-06-2007 02:55 AM

Installed Flashplayer 7 on my Sprint Mogul. Went straight to Youtube. The video and sound plays but it's very choppy.

I have flashplayer 7 but when i try to load youtube.com my phone freezes

Touche' 07-06-2007 04:38 PM

It won't let me install one single .cab from the first post... Just keeps telling me that it 'Cannot be installed', and to "Try a Different Location". The storage card prob wouldn't have worked anywa, but I couldn't even install it there.

Any ideas??

dmackdaddy 07-06-2007 06:03 PM

Wow, it works - now they just need a decent YT site.

johanku 07-06-2007 10:30 PM

Why not just use orb? It allows you to use the full youtube website
