how do you guys backup your PPC before flasing?

This post is timely. I have SPB Backup and intend to use it with my Diamond to flash Mighty's latest ROM.

With SPB Backup I had to manually copy my internal 4GB folder, though.

I didn't think it would all be THAT easy, though. Wouldn't my SPB Backup restore blow away some important registry information? Where does the ROM stop and the backed up data start?

I do nightly backups with SPB Backup.
Activesync backups are done whenever I hook up to my PC.
For special backups, I use BITPIM (http://www.bitpim.org/)

I used to use BitPim with my old "regular" phones. What can BitPim do with our pocket PCs?

I am more than a little paranoid about flashing my 700WX until I know the full story. Does SPB do for PPC's what Acronis TrueImage does for regular PC's? If i totally ef-up my Treo, will SPB restore EVERYTHING to how it was, or will it only do apps/settings/data. I am more worried about the OS than my contacts...

I had backed up with SPB, then installed a new ROM. When I restored the SPB backup things definitely weren't as they were before. The remove programs section was blank and there were other issues all over the place that it wasn't usable.

So, are you guys using SPB to backup, then installing a new ROM and then restoring your SBP backup file and having the phone working perfectly, just with a new base ROM? I can't see that ever working 100%. Maybe it could work better than it worked for me, but different ROMs might have some different registry settings and when you restore your backup, you'll overwrite the new ROMs registry settings with what was on your phone before.

I'd love if there was a way to backup, upgrade a ROM, restore and be back to exactly where I was before, software/settings wise. I just didn't think that was possible.

I've done so many little edits and software config/setting changes, it'd take me a good 4 hours to reinstall/reconfigure everything if I had to start over. That's why I'm never upgrading ROMs.

I've never done that in my TouchPro, but I bet I did it 30 times in my old Titan & had it work perfectly.

One of SPB's features is a ROM upgrade mode. You can use this after a ROM flash to restore all apps and settings except for those of your previous ROM

Maybe I missed that specific option when I tried it. I'd be pretty hesitant to give it another shot, but maybe it'll be worth it.

How do I get into SPB's ROM Upgrade mode? I just see options for full backup and custom backup. Is there something else I should be doing to make sure I'm in ROM Upgrade mode?

It usually comes up in that mode by default after you swap roms
