After seeing this thread I downloaded BeyondPod and have to say that I found it very useful. It is definitely better than most of the ones out there that cost money, and I love free!

To answer my own question: BeyondPod does not need to be running to download the shows on a schedule. This is pretty awesome. Loving the program, even though it crashes once in a while (had to get the beta version so that the schedule setting would save).

+100 for BeyondPod...its excellent! Imports from google reader. Simple and efficient! I tried using Egress and it was too complicated and failed for me. Beyond Pod works easily and like a champ!
