Refurb XV6800 - can't unlock/flash

I know this is a late post to an issue that may not be an issue for anyone else, but I ran into the same problems and resolved to unlock without downgrading the rom.

It appears that the refurb phone needed a hard reset before attempting to run nueSPL 2.47.

After the hard reset, the phone prompted for user customizations which apparently had not been run since the phone was refurbished. After customizations ran, then the nueSPL no longer got stuck with the grey 'Loading' screen and no progress or reset.

What a pain.
