Re: Help with VZW 6800 and MR1 to GPS? New to this!

Is it true that upgrading Mogul ppc 6800 ROM to the latest version would kill its tethering capability? I am with Sprint and am enjoying that treat when I am out of my network. I am enrolled with an unlimited data plan. I am not enrolled for phone as modem plan.

Re: Help with VZW 6800 and MR1 to GPS? New to this!

I don't know if you ever found your answer on the best way to upgrade, but I had the same issue myself and was hesitant to try because I was confused about the status of the GPS after going custom. However, I followed these instructions to the letter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=472805

and all worked out fine.

It's CRUCIAL you downgrade first using the first link in the first post, and then roll on. The 2nd post has points you to the wiki for getting GPS going using qpst.

It's a must read.

Just for clarification, will the above allow:
* "Standalone GPS" (i.e NO Verizon data charges will be incurred)
or is this still
* "Assisted GPS (aGPS)" (i.e. Verizon data charges WILL be incurred)?

I ask, because my current GPS applications only work after securing GPS Satellite "locks" by briefly allowing a Verizon Data connection (I enable data using "NoData"). Once "Satellite locks" are established, I can disable my Data connection (again using "NoData"), and continue to use my GPS application. If I do not allow a Data Connedtion, I never seem to get any "Satellite Locks" (so it sounds like I do not truly have "Standalone GPS", and keep incurring data charges). I can live with what I have, but would REALLY like to have "Standalone GPS".

Both as long as you downgrade the Verizon ROM before going custom.

Thanks!
One more "Q". if you don't mind.
What does the downgrade (to the earlier Verizon ROM) do?

I don't doubt that it works, but as a programmer, I would expect that any ROM (custom or stock), would completely over-write the previous ROM. I would REALLY like to understand how loading a "to-be-immediately-overwritten-ROM" works some kind of mojo?

The only analogy that I can come up with, would be that the Verizon ROM does something to the 6800, in the same way that a special PC program could alter the PC's BIOS.

I hunger for knowledge!

Not for sure exactly. I think it has something to do with the SPL locking out GPS maybe. I just know from experience that I new ROM doesn't override Verizon's settings to not allow GPS.

OK, last one (I promise)!!

Is there anyplace that NEWBIEs can go to get "clued-in" to the meaning of some of the common abbreviations/terms (PRL, PRI, ROM, SPL, QPST, GPS, aGPS).

Some I know, others, .... well ... I guess I am still

"Despite what others may tell you, I like to know what I am talking about."

Not that I know of. I just have learned them from reading.
But QPST is a program from Qualcom. Qualcom Product Support Tool.
GPS is just good old fashioned standard standalone GPS with no assistance.
aGPS is assisted by satellite locations from cell towers.

Re: Help with VZW 6800 and MR1 to GPS? New to this!

I am another person that can attest to the need to DOWNGRADE before doing anything else.

I received a replacement phone with MR2 already on it. I decided to just unlock it, with olipro 2.40, leave the existing 3.37 radio, and DCD 3.2.6. Everything took fine and I was able to activate it with no problem. I then tried to do the aGPS fix wiki which completely killed my ability to make/receive phone calls BEYOND repair.

Manual provisioning, an hour on the phone with Verizon, no luck. Had to swap the phone out.

This time, did the same procedure with the new device, but DOWNGRADED first. No problems.

Re: Help with VZW 6800 and MR1 to GPS? New to this!

Well GOOGLE helps fill the gaps:

PRL = Primary Roaming List (see link at gsmhosting or another useful link is at colorada )

PRI = Primary Roaming Interface

SPL = Secondary Program Loader (see links at wikipedia or xda-developers )

Hope this helps other newbies

I also found this usefull link, which gives good info on GPSModes and some registry settings: xda-developers
