Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
I'm technical by nature but not with phones.
My goal for flashing a ROM initially was because I want Internet Connection Sharing so I can hook up my Verizon XV6800 easily to any laptop and use it tethered for data access while I'm at a coffee shop, etc. When i found out I could actually have GPS access, etc. I was thrilled. So I just wanted to share the 4 links for 'guides' I have found so far and let me know if there is any other reading I should do or pitfalls to be aware of as a Verizon user that might not be in these guides, otherwise this seems like an exciting project (if not scary at the same time). Great community BTW! and P.S. although the Verizon Quick guide seems the best, I know I'll need to read every bit of each article to make sure I understand any implied or gotcha scenarios. So anything I'm missing or need to know before I set off on my journey? Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
I meant to add more to my original post but I can't edit it for some reason (probably an IE/Ajax issue) so I also wanted to ask, yet not derail my own thread, if there is any reason the following wouldn't work for an SD card as I've read too many posts against using USC cable (though it can work just fine).
Cheap yet well reviewed card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134478 Card reader (flexible for other stuff): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223088 -or- get the combo card and reader though not as flexibile for other types, who cares (plus I can't tell if the card is the same Kingston card): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134496 Thanks in advance to replies to both posts. |

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
What ROM are you currently running? That will determine what you need to do to get GPS going...

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
Good. You don't need to revert your PRI to get GPS working. All you need to do unlock your device, flash a 3.35 or higher radio, then flash a WM6.1 ROM.
You Radio version is the "Firmware Version", the ROM is "Software Version". Your PRI is "PRI Version". |

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
Thanks again for the response. In read through the links above, I have a few questions to make sure I understand, in addition to what you just added.
1) I've read in a couple places that if your bootloader is version 1.04, 1.06, or 2.07 then you must unlock your phone and upgrade to 2.40 or 2.47 [I am currently on version 1.04 (SPL-1.04.0000)]. Based on this, is it correct that: a) I could use either OliPro MFG 2.40 [Hard SPL] or nueSPL-2.40 correct? I can't seem to find why I would use one over the other though a couple Verizon users seemed to use the OliPro one... EDIT: Just read that nueSPL-2.47 can be run from an SD card which is what I had planned (in that it is one advantage of using that version) so does that mean OliPro 2.40 cannot be used on an SD card? My concern over using nueSPL 2.47 is reading this: "IMPORTANT: The nueROM web site indicates that nueSPL version 2.47 is designed for the HTC Titan with GPS enabled only (ROM versions 3.xx or higher). Any other device will be permanently and irreversibly damaged by this version of boot loader. (Please use your OEM's latest signed radio ROM to get to this version or higher before trying to install.)" - not sure how to interpret this as a noob :/ b) From what I understand, once I install an updated bootloader, I can no longer start the phone until I also update the corresponding radio and ROM correct? 2) I was planning on using (according to the quick VZ guide link above) a version of Titan Radio ROM 3.42.50 (Official/Alltel Update) and DCD Titan ROM 3.3.4 [Nov 10, 2008] but you mentioned WM 6.1 ROM which basically just means any ROM that is MS WM 6.1, including but not limited to DCD 3.3.4 correct? Thanks again Last edited by IH8VZ; 01-07-2009 at 12:50 AM. |

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
It isn't so much the rom as it is the radio you run for your gps to work. the best radio i've used is 3.42.50.
there's a great guide here, I didn't see if you linked this one or not, but here ya go http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=33857 I'm running DCD 3.3.4 and its great! but no you aren't limited to just dcd roms. IMO i've found them to be very snappy and stable.

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
Thanks Lyle, I did link that one.
What confuses me in that guide, and I probably should ask my question specific to it's advice in that thread, but as I asked above, can I use OliPro from a Micro SD or does only nueSPL-2.47 work that way? I've tried Googling OliPro 2.40 and Micro SD and there are a couple related threads it seems on the XDA Dev forums but it seems, at least for me, that site has been down for a while today. |

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
BTW, I keep asking questions (have more questions than answers) but is there anyway to export the EPST values instead of copything them down? I realize only a few are technically needed but all the same, is there any program to do this? I tried Googling and couldn't find any.

Re: Verizon first-time Noob - missing anything?
Olipro is over USB. nueSPL is from an SD. I use Radio 3.42.50 and get great GPS locks. I think you just try DCD's ROMs if you don't wanna use the Kitchen. I like the kitchen much better though. Can add my Apps, and I find the builds more stable...
