Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

Well maybe I'm a PITA but I hate the bloat of the stock Sprint ROM. I don't like the stuff Sprint sticks us with in the stock ROM update. If you want a fairly clean install you can do this:

1.) Update your ROM using the Sprint install.
2.) Wait..... as it updates you might see a stall at 11% with a re-boot on your device but just wait, it took 15 minutes on my laptop (XP SP3) before it re-started and re-started again 3x during the update, then it finished (@20 minutes total.)
3.) After the initial re-boot let everything run (customizations too!.)
4.) Hard re-boot and let the customizations run again. Connect to the internet to let IOTA re-provision your device.
5.) Hard re-boot and when the PPC comes back up soft reset before the Sprint Customizations run.
6.) After the PPC is up you will have a fairly clean PPC install of WM6.1 without the Sprint bloat!!!!!
7.) Run the CABs I wrote here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=32938 to add the Voice Mail Today Plugin and enable the Roaming Only Option for the phone.
8.) Install Total Commander to access the Extended_ROM and access Sprint TV and Navigaton if you like.

As far as I can see there is no functionality crippled by the above steps and all will work as expected with no lockups or problems. Have been runn ing this way for the past few days and all is well. Hope this works for you too! If it does then please give a thanks!

Re: Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

why hard reset step 4? Seems redundant - all you should need is the IOTA run.

Otherwise this is the standard way of doing things - let the cust run once to re-provision (if any are on extended rom) and then hard reset again to clear bloatware.

i concur... that is if your flashing a stock rom (and not flashing a no2chem ROM after that)

How about....

Re: Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

Schettj and Puff, yes it would seem that would be correct but for some reason without the second hard reset some third party applications had trouble loading (SBP Pocket Plus was one that gave me problems.) The first time this happened I thought it was just an isolated glitch but it happened three times the same way. The second hard reset seems to clear up these problems, why? I have no idea! The Extended_ROM is different in this version, it seems that there is more to the Sprint Customizations than the CAB files in the Extended_ROM, if you run them individually they don't have the same effect as letting them run automatically. I just thought by posting this it might save some people a few wasted hours. Hope it helps.

Re: Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

I have verizon and the OTA programming won't work, am I screwed or do I have to have Verzion do another network reset like when I went to a GPS ROM?

Re: Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

stemo76, are we to assume you flashed the Sprint 3.56 to your Verizon PPC6800? If so did you use Total Commander (or a similar program) to go into the Extended_ROM prior to the flash, save the Verizon IOTA.cab and run it after the upgrade?

Well as the old saying goes... YMMV - a second hard reset certainly wont hurt

Re: Sprint 3.56 Clean Upgrade!

Another thing that pisses me off about this release is that there is some Sprint specific functionality that is not found in any of the cabs in the extended ROM. Sprint Voicemail today plugin aint in there! I had to load stock with all customizations then manually dissect it out of the registry and the windows directory. Without it you don't get the Voicemails Alerts on the today screen, what a PITA!

#1 yes, upgraded to 3.56 on verzion XV6800.
#2 No, sounds like I am to late for this now. I am going to get this tool so that I can have that file for later upgrades.

What are my options now. Phone can call out and in but no data unless I am using wifi.

On a side not I couldn't use my data connection since last Sunday for some reason.

OK, the first thing is to try to get Verizon to do a remote IOTA provisioning for you. If that fails then I would recommend:

1.) Backup all your stuff!
2.) Flash back to your old rom (a verizon one with the verizon IOTA that includes GPS Service.)
3.) Install Total Commander and copy the contents of the entire Extended_ROM directory to your storage card.
4.) Follow my instructions in the first post in this thread.
5.) When you're up and running the clean install run the Verizon IOTA.cab from your storage card and install it to the device. DO NOT RUN THE SPRINT VOICEMAIL OR ROAMING CABS, they are carrier specific to Sprint.

If this works, great, if not please don't blame me for the borked phone, crossflashing is USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! If it does work please give some thanks! GOOD Luck!
